If one assumed the first letter was b, the word looked like bu?o??. Squint
a little, then. OK. I am thinking of a 6 letter word.

Re 474: You've said that already. I've been thoroughly chastised both
here and in my own item for my pouting, but I shall pout nonetheless.
Perhaps, if the same people keep winning, it would be nice if they could
defer to frequent guessers who never win (specify a name). The frustration
is that I can never run a word until I guess a word, so the item is run
by a pseudo-clique. Another suggestion is that, if you are a frequent winner,
you can guess *until* you know the word, and then stay mum or guide others
along. I'm just not having any fun because I don't have the time and
drive to pore through my dictionaries. (These are not suggestions for
rules, just for courteous behavior.)

I quite honestly do not consider it discourteous to play to win. I don't
mind a handicap system (I give my daughter a handicap when we play chess),
but I would not intentionally lose to please her. I think that is
dishonest. The fact of the matter is, in *this* (6-letter) game, you do
have to apply yourself a bit, in order to win (or have outrageouos luck).

(That's why I don't play chess, either. I didn't ask you to lose,
Rane, I asked you to not win. Big difference, but to get into it
would require moving to another conf.)

I think it's gossan...
but I'll guess "dodkin" (basically, any small coin; it's a Shorter
OED word, if you need a cite, I can supply
page ref, etc.).
