Well, there's only six logical possibilities from 459 and 461 alone, and not
all of those are even valid strings in English: bxsert, eosert, exuert,
exsnrt, exsect, exsere.
I'll go with exsect, and if I'm wrong, I'll cut it out.

lastword was "flours", with a score of 0 so
score(flours) = 0
score(flours) = score(flou-s) + score(----r-) = 0
so score(----r-) = 0
score(exsert) = 5
score(exsert) = score(exse-t) + score(----r-) = score(exse-t) + 0 = 5
so score(exse-t) = 5
score(bounce) = 1
score(bounce) = score(boun-e) + score(----c-) = 1
if score(exse-t) = 5 then score(boun-e) = 0
so score(bounce) = 0 + score(----c-)
so score(----c-) = 1
score(exsect) = score(exse-t) + score(----c-) = 5 + 1 = 6

Oh. I didn't base my response on anything other than the two I mentioned.
The possible words are eosert, exuert, exsect, and exsere. Of those, the third
seemed the most likely as an actual word, and indeed, it's the only one listed
by OneLook, although one could claim exsere means "formerly dry": After the
once-a-decade rain, the excere ground crackled as it absorbed the water.
That seems a bit forced, though. >=}

exsect 6 (brighn) ---> Ding! Ding! Ding! Winner!
Congrats, Paul, you're up!
BTW:
From Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary (1913) [web1913]:
Exsect \Ex*sect"\, v. t. [L. exsectio.]
1. A cutting out or away. --E. Darwin.
2. (Surg.) The removal by operation of a portion of a limb;
particularly, the removal of a portion of a bone in the
vicinity of a joint; the act or process of cutting out.

I'm thinking of a six letter word that isn't
exsect 0 (lastword)
(It isn't "phylum" either...)

As with the other item, I'll repost the series every 10 guesses or so.
