I need a handful of red (garbage-eating) worms. Anyone out there using worms
to compost who could let me have a cup or so of worms?

Mine aren't replicating fast enough.

I live in Amsterdam, if you mean the Netherlands. Born and raised there.
750 pubs, 300 - 400 restaurants, many theaters and smaller venues. +
Paradiso rocktemple nr. 1
Many coffeeshops, if you are into that other stuff they are selling
there.
Carribean restaurant La Margarita in Reguliersdwarsstraat (old centre
of town) is one of my fav. restaurant, but don't forget about all the
small eating cafes in Jordaan.
I live at walking distance from Jordaan.

You know more Indonesian places there than I do, then... there used to be one
in the Jordaan called Speciaal that was good, but the best one I've been to
is Puri Mas, down by the Leidseplein. I've also heard Tujuh Maret is good.
Bojo is cool if you're up at 3am and looking for food, but it isn't as good
as Puri Mas.

I have to get over there again.

cool! i am very excited (and a little nervous) but from what i hear from
europeans and others that have been there, the people and culture are very
laid back and friendly - gonna go with the flow ..

The two unfortunate things about Amsterdam (from our point of view, your
mileage may vary) are that everyone smokes, constantly, everywhere, and that
it's very expensive to live there unless you like youth hostels. Other than
that, it's about the coolest city I've ever been in. I'm even willing to put
up with the smoke to be there, which is saying something, because it can get
pretty bad if you're a non-smoker who's at all bothered by smoke. My wife
and I will go back any chance we get.

I agree. I've traveled some, but I never really feel comfortable in
strange places. It bugs me not to know the language, not to know my
way around. Amsterdam was one of the few places I ever visited where I
felt like I'd happily rent an apartment and spend the rest of my life
there. Not that it isn't plenty strange. In fact, in some ways it's
so strange that it doesn't feel strange to be a stranger there. You
feel like merely being from another country and not speaking the
language isn't enough strangeness for any of the natives to even
notice. Heck, most of them speak eleven languages anyway and don't
regard the Amsterdam way of doing things as the only way at all.
Totally unlike the so-called cosmopolitan cities of Paris or Rome,
where anyone not from the city is looked down upon. And in other ways
it's just comfortable - a big city but mostly on a very human scale.
If you want to up and go someplace, Amsterdam is a great choice.

I don't want to burst your bubble oval.
Better prepare yourself for an uptight, tense, agressive lot! Nothing
laid back about it. Traffic is sheer hell! Traffic rules? Forget it.
Amsterdam does not rock anymore.
It is deteriorating rapidly.
Maybe I am biased because I have been living there most of my life.
I don't like my city anymore, not as it used to be.
Eleven languages?
Hah!
Pidkin English and a couple of German words.
Get ready to be abused, cursed upon, treated with a bluntness you
wouldn't want to dream about. The only thing that isn't too bad, if you
are careful enough, is crime, but your bike *will* get stolen.

What if your bike is really crappy and you have it locked up all the
time. Will it get stolen then, Mr Smarty Pants????

haha. well too bad - i get "abused, cursed upon, treated with a bluntness you

wouldn't want to dream about" already here in this shithole. maybe you've
also heard about that incident with the WTC? that was loads of fun. if you
don't like your city then move. that's what i'm doing and at least i have the
courage to do it. go to berlin and take your agression out some germans or
something instead of telling me that where i'm getting ready to move and try
and start a new life with my husband and the little sanity i have left is a
crappy place to live. i live in brooklyn NY. i have had my bike stolen before.
i have also been yelled at, attacked and beaten in the street, used, robbed,
you name it - thanks for the heads up though.

it wasn't entirely my choice. it was one place we both could agree on. he is
an EU citizen so the EU makes things easier and he has some very good friends
there (great people) and the language transition will be easier since most
speak english there. (we both also agreed on spain but neither of us speak
spanish), etc. it was mostly his choice - after 9/11 we began discussing it.
