True, the site is not available, but as a FYI, current rates for a _finshed
wall_ (construction, paint, one electric outlet, door framing) is between $50
and $60 per running foot. At Plymouth Rd there were to have been _two walls_
required, of about 12ft and 14ft. 26ft x $50/ft = $1300. $700-750 to do it
yourself is, at least reasonable.

I'm still looking at another lead. There may be a need to put up a wall or
partition there as well, so this discussion is not totally off track. In the
meantime, I'd opt for valeries last possibility.

The Red Cross is aware of our problem, but is still trying to decide if they
can free up the space, and still waiting to hear from the city whether they
would allow us to inhabit their basement. I am disappointed to say the least
in how long this is taking to resolve. I am much less happy with the Red Cross
than I was a month ago. I am getting less and less optimistic that we can
count on them. They haven't said no, yet, but I am glad we are looking at
these other alternatives.

for one, i am not inthe least disappointed in the miniscule amount of time
it is taking for grex to find a competent home - particualrily given the
dictated and forced circumstances. no american entity should be dictated
to *jump* if some irrational borg snaps its digits absent some imminent
threat to the sanctity and solice of others.

The offer is a kind one, but I suspect many people would be uncomfortable
housing Grex in any individual's home. Though maybe it would be worth
considering.

We've been doing more wheeling and dealing on another site. I'm not going
to name names at this point because I don't have any idea if that's OK or not.
Still, I think the broad outlines should be discussed in public.

We would rent a nice room of our own in a nice building. It really meets all
our requirements, but the rent is high. It would be gradually esculating from
$210 a month to $285 a month during the first year (averaging at $247 a month
for the whole year) and then be $295 a month for the subsequent year. This
includes electricity, so it compares to about $25+$80 in our current location.

The big attraction is that there is an ISP in the building that would give
us a 112k hardwire internet conection for $175 a month, which is way lower
than the commerical rate. Since we would be directly connected to them, it
would be a more reliable link than the current phone-line connection we have,
and it would be four times faster than the current internet connection.

Basically, I don't think we can afford this right now. We'd be gambling that
we could get more donations with a faster link, enough to cover the
considerable increase in costs.

More options are still being explored.

We can't afford it. I'm sure some folks would like to try it but I'd bet
that within a very short time we'd be begging and pleading for money.
Also, there would a push to turn membership into something that resembled
payment for services instead of a donation to keep free community service
available for all.

I don't think we can afford it either. I also don't see the point in being
able to afford it. I'm not convinced that, compared to our other options,
it gains us anything useful.

something like 8 new *year* long memberships per month? No way we can afford
that, even if people really start supporting us.

I think I agree with Chelsea that a grex with those kind of expenses would
quickly become a broke grex or a grex that may not feel enough like the
current grex to be called grex.

I thought the desire was to remain local to A^2.

I agree that if grex were to get into the increased overhead position it could
be in danger of resembling Arbornets move to pay-only and begin to wither.

I will re-double my efforts again.

I know where Red Baron is, but to repeat myself, we have already
committed to keeping Grex in Ann Arbor.

I'd like to know when the move will be done so I can help. (Besides I really
wanna see the dungeon before it's not the dungeon.)

response 431 of 561: Mark Unseen   Sep 22 16:24 UTC 1996

I don't expect the move will require a lot of people. With any luck it will
be a matter of loading hte computer and miscellaneous stuff into a truck,
hauling it across town, and unloading it at the other end. Dungeon quarters
are pretty cramped and hordes of hands would just get in each other's way.

On the other hand, a few strong backs would be good, and sightseers wouldn't
be too big a problem. There certainly will be no reason at all left to keep
Grex's location slightly obscure.

Across town? Hell, you could practically cart it the distance on a
hand truck.

response 436 of 561: Mark Unseen   Sep 26 20:14 UTC 1996

The board settled on the West Huron location, and we are now in the process
of getting a lease done. Soon as that is done, we'll be ordering the
phonelines moved. It will depend on Ameritech when that gets done. Grex will
move when the phones do.
