IA unbelievably HB my gentoo box, which appeared to have switched
itself off this morning and wouldn't come back up, is mysteriously working
again after some clueless, desperate power plug-unplugging and re-inserting.

Very weird, but also insanely great!

You probably removed some tarnish with the (un)plugging, that was lowering
the voltage. If the problem recurs, try removing something from the box that
consumes power, such as CD-ROM drive. That fixed mine.

What is the big deal, Jonathan, about a 1 second delay? Or does the delay
get a lot longer with bigger files?
You would think a grexer would be used to long delays ;=)

A delay on *every major operation*, getting bigger with more files -- and this
was with no load on the system, while I usually run several things in the
background.

Can you set it to work with only 4-bit color? That would at least draw the
screen a lot faster. If not, try 8-bit. When running X add something about
--bpp (bits per pixel). startx --bpp 256 or 8 ?? I find even Abiword slow
to page around, probably because of all the colors.

It isn't the drawing the screen that's slow, it's the program itself. And I
don't think OO would work in fewer colors, though it might.

Abiword needs 8-bit, as did another wordprocessor I checked out. I don't know
why they can't let them work in mono, too lazy to add that I guess. The
program would probably also work faster with a file that had 256 instead or
16 million colors.

They don't work in mono because there is no significant demand in the
marketplace for wordprocessing interfaces which disallow anti-aliasing.

What is anti-aliasing and why do you need it to write text only?

Can we get back to "happy" posts? This is the happy item, put the computer
drift in a separate item

I am happy because my grandparents are coming in tomorrow for a long weekend
visit. We are taking them up to the Grand Canyon/Flagstaff/Sedona this
weekend. I haven't seen them since the wedding, so I'm excited.

IHB- I've had a very lovely vacation, and I don't go back to work until
tomorrow. :) After that it's a three-day week and I'm off work for the
weekend.

I loved Sedona when I was there. I happened to be there on the 4th of
July and got to see the town's fireworks display. What a nice place for
such a thing. As for the rest of Arizona that I saw that trip...well,
let's just say that I wouldnt recommend July as a good time to visit
Phoenix ;)

It's funny - my first experience here was in August. The weather didn't
bother me at all - now I think it's hot, but it seems bearable.

I once spent a week in Phoenix in August. The temperature was 115-120
degrees every day. I found myself drinking a quart of water every 15
minutes, just because I wanted that much water. That was with me
staying inside an air conditioned office all day.
