None of the words I can think of are correct. Let's try
shunts
should be worth a three.

Guess you're right; I'd thought penultimate /t/ had been eliminated, but it
hasn't actually occurred yet.

Onelook lists two words that fit the current pattern. One is:
shumac. Alternate spelling of sumac.
(That's either a 4 or a 6, or I'm not on the right track.)

shumac 6 (brighn) ---> Ding! Ding! Ding! Winner!
Turned out not to be so mysterious in the end. I just thought
it was weird because I've always seen 'sumac' never 'shumac'.
Your word, Paul.

First time I've seen shumac, too; www.m-w.com didn't turn it up, either.

I wasn't aware of that pronunciation. I credit OneLook.
The only other shu___ that hadn't been eliminated already was shuham, and I
couldn't find any clear meaning for it (it's an Old Testament name that has
apparently been used as an adjective... it's weird, go to OneLook and look
it up, you'll see what I mean).
I have a word that is not
shumac 0 (lastword)
