I asked Jonathan whether he would like to sing a duet with me in such a
recital, and he said No, but indicated that he would like to play the piano.
(He's 13 now) If the date doesn't conflict with our *full* summer schedule,
probably each boy would like to make an appearance as pianist.

Very nice.

I've done a little calling around to try to find a suitable
space. I'm placing some follow-up calls tomorrow. A space
that is priced right and comes with a piano seems to be
the sticky point.

I apologize ahead of time for not being able to post lots
of dates here and have a debate about which one works best
but by the time we decide the space would, no doubt, be booked.

So I'm probably going to just go with an open Saturday or Sunday
afternoon, in June, if I can get such a date. If you are planning to
perform and know there is a day in there you can't make, please let me
know in mail ASAP. Thanks.

Mary, havwe you tried Northside Community Church? They do
lots of recitals there, and only ask for a $50 contribution
(which I would be willing to help out with).

mary

Nope, didn't know about Northside. I'll call them too.
Thanks, Leslie.

I am looking into First Presbyterian Church (where we had
it last time), Kerrytown Concert House, and Green Wood Coffee
House (where Katie has concerts).

We'll here is where it's at. Dates are tight. It looks like
either Saturday, June 24th, or sometime in very late July or
in August. On June 24th we lose a couple of people who
aren't available, which leave only about five or six
people who have stated an interest in performing. I'm not
sure that's enough interest, actually.

Do we go for something later in the summer and hope to round-up
more interest? Take the June 24th date and just have it be
a smaller deal? Whatchathink?

I've gone through and counted up the volunteers.

Aruba, scott, remmers, orinoco, otter, davel & family, jules, arabella and
katie have all said they'd be interested. But so far only aruba and
remmers have confirmed they can make June 24th. I know arabella and davel
& family can't make it that date. So I'm going to call and release the
reservation.

I'll ask about dates in August.

The 24th of June is fine by me. I thought Mary only wanted to hear from
people who *couldn't* make that date. ?

response 44 of 63: Mark Unseen   Apr 29 23:27 UTC 2000

Yeah, me too. It was fine with me.
But so is anything after the first weekend in August.
Mary, I will send you the e-mail address I check daily...

june 24 is bad for me, cause im gonna be probably catering to all of the
musicians who perform at the frog island jazz festival, which is that weekend.

I think I'll just have gotten back to Ann Arbor on june 24th.

I don't expect to be back in Ann Arbor until about August 23.
I would really like to participate in the grex recital, so
a date at the end of August or beginning of September would
work best for me.

I mentioned this to Staci (she plays violin and mandolin) she said she might
be interested, especially if she can convince Damon to play his trumpet in
a duet with her.

Ooh, right, TOP. But we're talking afternoon, so that is still OK for people
who aren't actually working TOP.

I know it's almost four months away but how would the afternoon of
Saturday, August 26th, work for folks? That date is available.

aruba
response 52 of 63: Mark Unseen   May 1 22:48 UTC 2000

I'll be gone from about August 10th through Labor Day.
mary
response 53 of 63: Mark Unseen   May 1 23:38 UTC 2000

Ack, I think you told me that in email once already, Mark. Sorry.

I don't think this is going to come off this summer. People have full
lives and lots going on. I know I only have two Saturdays free in the
next 3 months, and I'm not unusual. And trying to get at least 10 people
to be able to perform on either of those dates would be tricky.

How about we come back to this in a few months, maybe planning a recital
sometime in the fall?

response 54 of 63: Mark Unseen   May 2 11:28 UTC 2000

Out of blatent curiousity, why does it have to be on a Saturday?
mary
response 55 of 63: Mark Unseen   May 2 23:09 UTC 2000

Tradition. ;-)

The church has that space booked on Sunday's. Would there
be more people willing to make a weekday evening recital?
I rather thought not but I could be wrong.
orinoco
response 56 of 63: Mark Unseen   May 2 23:13 UTC 2000

The Kerrytown Concert House might be possible on Sundays
mary
response 57 of 63: Mark Unseen   May 2 23:31 UTC 2000

Yep, but they are a bit pricey. As is the Unitarian Church who
wanted $200 for a small chapel that seats, maybe, 30 comfortably.
The space we rented last time around is not available due to
an extensive renovation project just getting underway. Greenwood
Coffee house doesn't have a piano and won't rent to non-members.

aruba
response 58 of 63: Mark Unseen   May 3 02:43 UTC 2000

I could do a weekday evening, I guess.
katie
response 59 of 63: Mark Unseen   May 3 05:09 UTC 2000

Mary, who did you talk to about Green Wood? Green Wood has 2 pianos (one
electric, one upright) and does rent to nonmembers. 'Sides which, I am a
member. I am majorly puzzled.

mary
response 60 of 63: Mark Unseen   May 3 12:22 UTC 2000

I spoke with the woman who said Rev. Eardly wasn't there but
asked if she could help. She was nice enough but did say there
wasn't a working piano and that they really didn't rent out the
space to the public. I did mention you would be involved in
the recital.

Did I give up on this, for this summer, too soon? I'm certainly
interested in seeing a recital happen but I'm not into pulling
teeth to get folks to commit. There were enough performers expressing
interest in general but not when specific dates were mentioned.
Would a weeknight evening work, especially a Friday? What happened
to our poets? Maybe somebody got wind of the fact I was going
to be playing the cello? ;-)

katie
response 61 of 63: Mark Unseen   May 3 13:21 UTC 2000

Must have been an office volunteer who misunderstood. I'll check on it.
