I think such a conference would be superfluous. At best, a
private clique of FW's. At worst....

How about a fw's *item* here, to see if anyone has anything to saying about
fwing?

response 353 of 470: Mark Unseen   Sep 19 10:55 UTC 1996

Or how about all the FW items that have showed up in the Info conference?

on teh uM system there was a conference for 'organizers' .. more active
than 'fw' but the same concept, generally. it was of course public
and helped with the more complicated Confer system. besides having
a more to do, organizers changed very often (comparatively) and there
were some system-wide 'rules' that we don't (thankfully) have.

probably superfluous to have a fw.cf, imo.

Not only that, but it's against grex policy to have a closed cf with the
single exception of the staff cf, which is closed for security reasons. This
came up a while back, when a company wanted to rent a private cf for compoany
business. (I think) It was decided that Grex didn't do closed cf's. I
wouldn't mind an fw cf, but not closed.

It would be great if your Utne people were interested in this too, Jan--
we might even work on outreach to other Utne groups around the world.

Have you seen the http://www.utne.com conferencing system? I don't recall
that it had much salon discussion, but it is one of the nicer public web
conferencing communities.

I tried joining the Utne conferencing system, and was told that
I could use it with Lynx. >8(((

Kevin, I suggest checking out the fw items in the info conference first, and
seeing if that's enough, rather than starting an entire fw conference.

response 361 of 470: Mark Unseen   Sep 19 20:56 UTC 1996

If we have an FW-only conference, maybe we should have a conference for only
those peoplle who aren't FWing any conferences.
Now, who would FW THAT?

It might be interesting to broaden an Utne conference to a "salon" conference.
I've always wanted to join a good book reading group (where a book is selected
each month for everyone to read and discuss for the next meeting). The Ann
Arbor B&N store sponsored some groups like this, and I tried them, but I was
turned off by (1) low attendence, and (2) B&N's insistance that we read only
books available in hardcover only. I'd love to find out about/form a somewhat
less commerical reading group.

me too. It would get me in to a whole world of literature that I ordinarily
wouldn't be exposed to.

response 369 of 470: Mark Unseen   Sep 25 13:16 UTC 1996

No, it can't be closed. At least not without a member vote on it.

Do you want any co-fairwitnesses?
davel
response 370 of 470: Mark Unseen   Sep 25 14:04 UTC 1996

(And discussion of having *any* closed conferences has always generated a lot
of strong opposition, along with a lot of grumbling about the staff
conference. I'd say it's not going to happen in the forseeable future.)

Uhm, no c-fw's yet, but can I add one if I want ??

Okay, okay, it will be open.

Re 371: Yup, you can add co-fairwitnesses by sending mail to cfadm requesting
it.

Re 372: The Utne Salon conference now exists. It doesn't have any items yet,
but it does exist.

I can assure you, from a discussion I've just been in on another BBS, that
hesitations that folks have felt about a closed quad for anyne other than just
baff is a VERY bad idea. The staff conf is confidential. It is important to
have such a conference. The other board that some of us (me, Selena, Jenna)
are active on has a closed conf for all admins (helpers and FWS as well as
baff), and it's a vERY politically messy thing.
