I'll note that do.lm is basically a shell wrapper script around srw's
awk script for doing the counts. It helps maintain your letter.match
file and lets you back out of bad runs. The results of a run are
saved in a file so that they can be imported into your response here.
I haven't really changed the script much in the last year or so, other
than to include srw's script directly rather than calling it (just so
it doesn't get depermitted or moved to another location, for instance).
The script is readable as well as executable (I would recommend looking
over any script in someone else's directory just in case they did
something malicious--I don't believe I did, though :). If you want to
copy it and change it, go ahead. You don't need to be running the game
to give it a try. It works for me, and I've been using it for almost
as long as I've been participating in this game.

"/a/k/e/kentn/do.lm5" is the same script, but for the 5-letter game.
The two scripts save their results to two different sets of files, so
you can use both scripts to run both games at the same time, if you
should be so lucky ;).

Kent, how does one run do.lm? Instructions anywhere? They aren't in the file.

You run <path>/do.lm merely by entering its name on the Unix (shell) command
line (prompt). Its first line invokes another shell program it wants to run
it. Meanwhile,

I copied the file to my directory and entered do.lm at a unix prompt. It said,
command not found.

Since you copied it, you probably lost the executable permissions on it.
Do 'chmod 700 do.lm; rehash' and then try 'do.lm'. Or since it's a
shell script, I suppose you could do 'sh do.lm', but I think they're
easier to use when executable (and do.lm is set up to be run that way,
as albaugh mentions). do.lm will prompt you and give examples as it runs.
The first thing you see should be a summary of what do.lm is going to do,
then it does it thing.

OK. After chmoding and rehashing, sh do.lm works. Now, to experiment, for
when my turn comes again...
