Could you give a reference for iolite, Kent?

Sure. OED is one:

iolite i.olit. Min. Also yolite, iolithe. [= Ger. iolith (Werner, 1808),
f. Gr. ion violet + liqoj stone: see -lite. ] A silicate of aluminium,
iron, and magnesium, occurring in short orthorhombic crystals, or
granular; of various shades of blue or violet-blue, and commonly showing
different colours in different directions; very subject to alteration
by exposure, giving rise to many varieties. Also called cordierite or
dichroite.

Also, from Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary (1913) [web1913]:

  Iolite \I"o*lite\, n. [Gr. ? a violet + -lite.] (Min.)
A silicate of alumina, iron, and magnesia, having a bright
blue color and vitreous luster; cordierite. It is remarkable
for its dichroism, and is also called dichroite.

Okay, sorry for the delay (and thanks, Mark, for the reminder), I've
been working too many hours at work, it seems. Anyway, I'm thinking
of a 6-letter word and in terms of the current guesses, it's not:

  bottom 0 (Last Word)
  rivers 0 (prp)
  threat 0 (kooky1)

A summary of guesses is in ~kentn/letter.match6
