Tobacco has probably killed more people than electric chairs and DDT combined.
I object to its being used in public air.

Huron Indian myth has it that in ancient times, when the land was barren and
the people were starving, the Great Spirit sent forth a woman to save
humanity. As she traveled over the world, everywhere her right hand touched
the soil, there grew potatoes. And everywhere her left hand touched the soil,
there grew corn. And when the world was rich and fertile, she sat down and
rested. When she arose, there grew tobacco . . .

And when people finished growing tobacco in the fertile areas, the soil was
impoverished and the people had to move elsewhere.

My favorite electric chair story involves Emperor Menelek II of Ethiopia.
He ordered three of them to use in executing criminals, not realizing that
they required a source of electric current (which was not available at the
time of their delivery..) So he used one of the chairs as his throne..

My least favorite electric chair story is that of William Kemmler's
execution.

How about George Appel?: As he was being strapped into the electric
chair, he said, "Well, folks, you'll soon see a baked Appel..."

Then there was James Donald French...Turning to a newsman while on his
way to the electric chair, French suggested, "I have a terrific headline
for you in the morning: 'French Fries'."

Funny guys.

Re resp:169: Uhm...drug laws *are* administered on a federal level.
You know that, right?

Re resp:211: "Drug dealers *target* young people."

So do people advertising other things, including toys and junk food.
I'm not sure that problem is unique to drugs. If they were legal at
least they could be regulated in a way that restricts minors' access to
them.

Tobacco companies are drug dealers that target young people.

Because morals work based on certain MAXIMS, and if we can show that a certain
maxim is untenable in one situation, we can conclude that the maxim is an
inconsistent scumbag failure.

Re resp:324: And there are some pretty strong prohibitions on them
doing so, to the point where they've almost ceased advertising
entirely. That's the kind of pressure you can only put on a legal
industry.

re #328: I don't read many magazines -- have they really stopped print
advertising campaigns or are you talking only about TV & radio?
gull
response 330 of 331: Mark Unseen   Mar 18 01:01 UTC 2006

I don't think I've seen a print ad in a while, but I probably just
don't get the right kinds of magazines. I was thinking mostly of TV,
radio, and outdoor advertising.
