the grex community was more susceptable to people like chad.  Those
responses were the answers.

That doesn't mean that I don't think that Grex has a lot to offer,
as Nate points out in resp:30.

Another point is that the vast majority of Grex users fall outside
of the Grex community proper, if one defines that community as those
who participate in BBS and/or party.  It is this latter that people
take issue with; most Grex users just don't care.

In short, my definition of Grex is rather broader than most.  I
don't see it only as a BBS for the Ann Arbor, MI community.  If people
see it that way, they are probably viewing things with an outdated
point of view.

The type of person grex attracts? I really dont look at grex as attracting
a TYPE of person. Although the mentality of a system that leads to trying to
assign TYPE to its users does not sound very attractive to me. The very notion
of openess is what first attracted me to Grex. By browsing the list of
available conferences I was left with the impression that this was a place
that attracted all types - every type. 

The one thing that _could_ be said about anyone you are likely to come across
is that they share a common intrest in a UNIX style BBS System and are likely
_bent_ towards text and the written word. If you are the TYPE that wants
pictures I doubt I will run into you very often here. If you cant read english
you will likely feel the sting of rejection if you come to Grex. So why not
at least open the doors enough to give the people what they come here for.
Like an introductory conference of some sort. Perhaps open a separate instance
of a general type conference ~Welcome To YOU~ . And let the visitor jump right
in. Establish some goals that must be acheived before allowing anyone behind
the curtain. The old timers could moderate if you will - or not. Perhaps the
nubee could be required to write a 500 word essay on ~Why I Want In~. Publish
those on the website and let the public read the reasons people give for
wanting to get in to Cyberspace. Behind the curtain could be the lure of
command line, email, party, games and a community of folks that have also paid
their _dues_ to get in - giving everyone one more thing in common. 

If there ar a substantial number of people who want to hack their way into
a system why not offer a DMZ to mess with. Something similar to the primary
system but disconnected for safety. Let the Hacking cuz nobody loves me crowd
would have their own conference and discuss how they are able (or trying) to
break-in but they might develop too much community spirit to think about
trying that in their own home. A close eye on the DMZ would give sysops a clue
as to the vulnerabilities and vectors. 

I was a bit offended by the cross characterization of the grex community and
wonder if oftentimes we are seeing the pot calling the kettle black. (but that
would never happen here.)

I really do like everything about Grex. I have alway wondered though, if it
couldnt offer more. Keep fighting the good fight. Check ya L8er
