In the early 80s, which is the only period I was listening to popular
music on the radio regularly, "oldies" and even "classic rock" went up
to 1963. Anything from the British Invasion on was contemporary. This
distinction was very clear. I guess that the term "classic rock" is
moving up to cover more ground faster than "oldies" (which itself has a
quaint ring to it now) has.

Ah yes, Fiona Apple's "When the Pawn" I agree with Ashke about her
singing and writing abilities... I try to ignore everything else, but I
do like that album, I'd list my favorites, but all the song names are
eluding me- I pretty much only know things like 'well, I like the 4th
song on the cd' and so on. ;)

Hmm... any other purchases this year... None that come to mind. Must
think more.

Oh... one I do recall, Rasputina's 'Thanks for the Ether.' Rasputina
being a trio of women cello players with songs like Transylvanian
Concubine and My Little Shirt Waist Fire, and one of my favorites that
likens the earliest American settlers to the Donnor party. It's not
the 'harmonious' music I tend to like, but they're an offbeat group
that I just find interesting and amusing.

I've been buying so little music lately that I'm not really qualified to
make a top ten list (all the ones I bought?). But I've been enjoying a
recently purchased album call "Full Contact" by a group named "Dry &
Heavy". This is a Japanese Reggae band. The concept alone is
entertaining enough to make the album worth the price. And it's fun to
listen to too, kinda techno-reggae, danceable and high-spirited.

In Detroit, at least, Classic Rock is easy to define: Anything the WCSX (94.7)
plays. That includes not just stuff from the 70s, but most of the oeuvre of
bands whose major hits classify as "classic rock" -- 90s stuff from Elton
John, for instance [except the ballads, I s'ppose].
