Thanks! They replaced the CVT control valve assembly
and a valve timing solenoid. Thankfully it was covered by
warranty so only cost me $100 out of pocket. I got lucky
this time.

Re 5: that's good news. Control valves and solenoids sound like things
that can go bad over time. Be glad it wasn't a computer module or
something like that.

Got new rear brakes (pads and rotors) for <$300 fitted.
Front will need doing soon too.
