Re 272: Hm. I was under the impression that the new conference was created
for the flirtatious drift from the sexuality conference. Nobody even
mentioned the bawdier stuff, that I recall.

I guess it wasn't safe to stop reading this item....
Instinct told me to come back, and so I did.
Yes, Carson, the rules are CYA. I have a fatal flaw of trying to
make everyone happy.
Selena, *if* you had come to me *first* and discussed this problem,
I might have considered doing something about it. Instead, you spread
it on Sex, and here, and *then* talked to me about it.
IF SOMEBODY DOES NOT LIKE THE JOB I'
M DOING, TELL **ME**!!!!
This tells me, Selena, that you don't really trust me, that you don't really
feel comfortable talking to me, etc. etc.

*composes self*
Now, then, I have annotated the rules with an explanation. The intention
of the rules was to make sure the totally irresponsible didn't go nuts and
destroy things. Neither Selena nor Peacefrg (to name the two above)
has ever demonstrated the type of irresponsibility I'm concerned about,
and were not the target of the rules. #1 seems to be the bone of
contention, and I *will* be lax on it, extremely so. As much as I know
Grex' feelings on hardcore and inappropriate materials, I also know Grex'
feelings on censorship, and I'm doing my damnedest to balance those
extremes. If anybody thinks I'm being too much to one side or the other,
discuss it with me.

Personally, I like the new cf. So don't think that my views were shared with
Selenas.

No, that should tell you that I react to something WHERE I encounter
it.

I know this has been mentioned before, but what Grex could really
use is a conf that would be devoted to politics and the media. I
would phrase it in that way because the two cant exsist without each
other. Every political debate is framed by how it plays or will
play in the media, and all too often the media ends up defining the
political debate.
I envision drift items on the individual presidential campaigns and
items on special events like the Clinton/Gingrich meeting over the
weekend. There could also be items devoted to specific news coverage,
like nightline townhall meetings and media reaction to the Oklahoma
bombings.
The "World" conf is quite general, whereas this one would be more
specifically geared towards how issues relate to or will impact upon
the next election, with the necessary subplot of how the electorate is
relating to the media.
In short, I propose a conf that would be something akin to an
electronic version of CNN's Inside Politics show. Since I'm in D.C. and
politics is my field, I'll offer to co-fw it, but it should have two or
three fws preferably with different (or at least non-identical)
political views so the conf is well rounded and cant be accused of
fostering specific agendas. I think it would be a strong conf if done
right. Call it the "Electioneering" Conf or something

I like that idea, IMHO.

As usual, we'll allow a few days for user input into this proposal.
Kerouac, let us know after about 5 days or a week or so, either here
or in mail to cfadm, if you still want the conference, and it'll be
set up.

Got a cute idea of what to call it too
"GREXING THE VOTE: Politics and the Media"

I want to download some information I have on the candidates for
president, and give each candidate a separate item. Might also include
a running item on voter registration information in Michigan and other
areas where grexers may live.

kerouac - excellent idea! I hope, not to far in the future, we
could point to this coference from HVCN. "As we speak" a home page
for the AA Area League of Women Voters is being developed to
go on HVCN (The Smoke and Mirrors Net) and maybe the two concepts
could be coordinated? I will let you know when the prototype is
ready, hopefully by June 20. (the home page(s)) srw?

response 286 of 361: Mark Unseen   Jun 15 04:50 UTC 1995

I think this will be an interesting conference, and I will participate.
Arnold is spilling beans about the HVCN going on the air for internal
testing. This is drift in this item, but a conf like the proposed is a good
example of how HVCN and Grex can complement each other. I am sure HVCN
will be encouraging its own users who are interested in going beyond
what HVCN provides to connect to Grex, even if only to participate
in politics & media discussions.

This sounds like a cool conference! I won't volunteer to co-fw, though, since
I'm swamped with other things at the moment, and don't feel like thinking
about that sort of thing.

Beans? Beans? What beans? Unless I get the "DriftMaster"
t-shirt you promised, srw, I won't let any HVCN people
express their views in your conference. So there!

response 289 of 361: Mark Unseen   Jun 16 01:16 UTC 1995

thanks scg...i can do most of the fw legwork for the conf, but I'
havent fw'ed before so its helpful to have someone who's more familiar
with the commands (I'm guessing that link means "link" and .etc)
And I'm afraid of this conf being too narrowly focused so I dont want to
get hung up on the specific campaigns (or else this conf will die like a dog
after next november) I have been thinking of doing an "issue of the month"
which would get participants views on specific issues every month. I want
to keep the emphasis that the issues are more important than the personalities
or the horse race mentality

the info conference).

response 292 of 361: Mark Unseen   Jun 20 22:45 UTC 1995

You can also type !more /u/nephi/fwguide at the Ok: prompt to
see a general introduction to fair witnessing. It also has a pretty
good explanation of how all of the FW commands work.

response 293 of 361: Mark Unseen   Jun 23 16:22 UTC 1995

It appears that the FW of the conference formerly known as IQ has finally
been reaped. This leaves the conference without a FW.

I'd like to reiterate my request of several months ago (which was delayed
pending approval of newly-reaped previous FW) to be installed as a FW of
the IQ conference.

I have a proposal that I would like to fw. I would like to make a FAN conf.
Similar to the alt.fan newsgroups. People could enter
itmes about the celebrity or person they are fans of and they can talk
about it.
It seems that the alt.fan groups are VERY popular.
Plus you can get into gossip, Little Known Facts, E-mail addresses etc...
I think it could be fun.
kerouac
response 298 of 361: Mark Unseen   Jun 26 20:07 UTC 1995

This is an interesting idea. There could be individual items for
different groups or tv shows. But an alt.fan.pearl jam item could
easily go into the music conf, and alt.fan.bradybunch could easily
fit into hippie or arts. But there's probably nothing wrong with having
a fan conf, and any of such items could be linked elsewhere at the same
time.

response 299 of 361: Mark Unseen   Jun 26 21:26 UTC 1995

I like the idea. True, there will be lots of items which could be
in other conferences, but linking them is no problem.
