re resp:26: Fortunately, to help control his urge to obtain responses,
we have someone who will go around and respond to everything he says,
in every item. This will help. All of the users of Grex can know this
user will always be rewarded for his contributions. We don't have to
deal with any hope he might someday go away.

There are two ways to confront jerks. One is to ignore them (as most here
suggest) and the other is to confront them, which I think is more effective.
We are probably both wrong, of course, but are both free to exercise what we
think is best.

Rane you are being a jerk. Use a twit filter. Twits like attention.

I don't think just pointing out that he's a dope/jerk IS an effective way of
confronting him, or any other dope/jerk.

Sindi slipped.

Those are your opinions. I have mine. Why do we need to fight? I'm not
attacking your opinions.

As an empirical Man of Science, can you offer us any evidence of this
 effectiveness you claim?

Can anyone with a credulous bone in their body really believe that an old,
weak man responding to jmvm's every post with 'What a jerk' is going to
convince jmvm to stop posting and it's going to annoy people just as much if
not more than his posts?

I like jmvm's posts BECAUSE of the response they receive and because, even
though they might be repetative, they have infinitely more variety than Prof.
Kerl's.

How do you know he's old or weak?

response 36 of 79: Mark Unseen   Jan 5 22:59 UTC 2006

Have you ever seen his age?!

response 37 of 79: Mark Unseen   Jan 5 23:15 UTC 2006

What's this, ageism *and* weakism? scholar has these atrophied mental
images of people.

"repetitive"

My evidence is a number of current Grex users that started out as jerks
but by being reminded of that have become quite interesting participants.

I'm opposed to Sindi's prescription of using twit filters, by the way.
That does nothing to correct the situation since it is the same as not
even being there.

I'm sure I'm older than Rane in X-rays.

I don't try to convince jerks that they are jerks, I just ignore them.

response 40 of 79: Mark Unseen   Jan 6 09:50 UTC 2006

And we're all happy knowing you find comfort in ignoring them.Everyone
else will deal with jerks in the manner that makes them comfortable. If
they don't ignore them, deal.

It would probably be easier to filter Rane than to convince him his "jerk"
comments are compounding the problem.

If she's already filtering trap, what the hell does she need to worry
about?

response 43 of 79: Mark Unseen   Jan 6 15:01 UTC 2006

It is the usual problem a group of people who care very dearly about
the same thing but who have strong and opposite opinions of how
best to resolve a problem that affects it.

But sometimes, you have to admit, we do get into some pretty good
discussions about the best methods for dealing with obnoxious people.

There would be like *5* people left...seriously, I can think of maybe 3 people
on here who aren't obnoxious from time to time. (And I most assuredly am not
one of them.)

response 48 of 79: Mark Unseen   Jan 6 18:15 UTC 2006

I can think of aruba, mcnally, janc, remmers, bhoward, i, srh, jadecat,
polygon and even some grexers not on board or staff who are never obnoxious.

response 49 of 79: Mark Unseen   Jan 6 18:23 UTC 2006

I think all of those people (except srh, who the hell is he?) are basically
good people and if I had $500, I would trust any one of them to return it if
I gave it to them.
mcnally
response 50 of 79: Mark Unseen   Jan 6 18:32 UTC 2006

Although I try to minimize my misbehavior, it would be a significant error
to believe that I am never obnoxious.
