When I do backups, I only back up my Documents and Outlook Express mail. And
that's pretty rare. I should probably do it more often now that I have two
HDs again.

I used to do it that way, but last time I had to reinstall my system it was
days before everything was back the way I like it and all my software was
re-installed. I'd rather avoid having to do that again.

I keep all my documents on 360K floppy disk. I keep my programs on at least
two computers as they are tricky to set up (especially lynx as it also
requires configuring things in various other programs and directories, and
anything related to pdf and ps and image viewing which someone sent me in his
own versions). It is helpful to also have backup computers so that you can
move the hard drives over if one fails. We are on computer number four in
once case after two computers stopped booting and one would not recognize d:

Despite losing a pitcher, we defeated Morehead State University
yesterday afternoon. Next is a four-game weekend homestand, beginning
with the University of the District of Columbia.

I used those 5 1/4 disks until we got a new computer that didn't have the
drive, which was probably a year or so before I went to college. Much of the
work I did on computer in middle and high school was saved on those disks,
and probably still is... somewhere.
No one in my family ever throws away ANYTHING.

The work I did on computer in high school was saved on paper tape. I finally
threw it out in 1990. Yellow paper about 2" wide, I think. Or 1"?
In college we used punch cards which are useful for taking phone messages.

There's a busy signal on the modems tonight. We've contracted as
far as we can, I guess.

The occasional busy signal does show system health and that
the modems are still in demand. Grex must be a good balance point.

**** NEW DATE TUE 5/7/2002 *****
On Tuesday 5/7/2002, at 7:30pm, the Ann Arbor Computer Society presents:
Christian Gross will present The State of Wireless.
Kiva Conference Center
Old Erim Building
3600 Green Court
Ann Arbor, MI 48105
So here we are one meltdown behind us and an environment of "who knows"
in front of us. Wireless was part of the dot-com frenzy, with billions
and billions being traded by providers. So the question is was here a
Wireless meltdown as well? What happened? Are we going to watch movies
on wireless? What is the wireless scoop?. And that is the purpose of
this get together: To discuss the state of wireless from a global
perspective from somebody who has one foot in North America and one foot
in Europe.
for the rest of us .....

A benefit of playing in a dome is that games are rarely called for weather.
So, despite a fresh layer of snow, the Northern Michigan University baseball
team played a doubleheader this afternoon against its regional rival, Bay
de Noc Community College. The Wildcats easily won the first game, 4-1,
but struggled in the second game. Still, twelve innings later, the Wildcats
were victorious again, 5-4.
Next week, the team travels to Sault Sainte Marie to play back-to-back
doubleheaders against conference leader Lake Superior State University.

resp:269 is Eudora preferrable to other mail programs? I'd consider
it, but I use Outlook mostly because I have a long-standing Hotmail
account that I really would prefer to keep open.
Outlook 6 is the version I use, and it crashes a lot. Sure, there's a
version for XP, but I ain't forking out the bux for OfficeXP.

I think Hotmail uses POP or IMAP (forget which) so any email client should
work. Eudora is okay, but has a bit too much "screen furniture" for my
taste. I use Outlook under Windows, and either Ximian Evolution or
Mozilla Mail under Linux, depending on whether I'm at home or at work.
Evolution is quite nice (and rather Outlook-ish, but you can turn off a lot
of that if you don't like it) but is hard to install if you're not running
Ximian GNOME, because of the dependancies.
