I concur with carson that the word is of the for nu..e., and I know it's not
nuclei (or bucket would have been 3 instead of 2) and I know it's not
nuzzer (or hugger would have been 3 instead of 2).
For exactly the reasons you posted in 244, I prefer not to search for
letters. Since this is a game, I like to *win*. However, I am stymied
and have no chance to win if I don't know the word, so I'll switch into
letter guessing mode at this point, and the game will continue.

Say, if any of these "no clue" guesses are right, I'd not reveal
it unless I saw a source... In fact, I'l be awfully irate if
one of them is correct without a source.

players around the bend. They must live too close to a ------.

Okay, I haven't a clue what "nudrei", "nuhrei", or "nuxrei" mean,
which is to say I've looked in five dictionaries and can't find
any one of them. To the guessers of those words, please provide
the definitions and reputable sources to back up your guesses.

nuplex 6 kentn Good Job!
My dictionary says: "Coined (1968) by the AEC....any of a number of
proposed concentrations of industrial facilities clustered around a large
nuclear reactor as their source of power."

Mine says "a nuclear-powered complex of industrial manufacturers".
Wasn't in my 1988 Web 9th New Collegiate, but it was in a 1990 World
Book Dict.
One confusing aspect of this puzzle was NUCLEI 4. Or maybe I should
say YELLOW 0...shouldn't that be a 1? I had the 4 in nuclei as (I
think everyone else did, too) NU__EI since YELLOW knocked out the L
and BECKON knocked out the C.

(bingo! the error I'd been looking for!)
(BTW, with aruba and I having illegitimate guesses, kentn went twice in
a row.)
(I won't guess, because that would be stealing from the sweat of another
man's brow.)

I assume no self-respecting scholar would enter an "illegitimate"
guess, especially after all the challenges you've seen me put to
on the legitimate words I've entered as guesses. While I may not
be able to find your guesses in *my* dictionaries, it's up to Rane
or you to decide if they are illegitimate. I can only ask for proof.
I would be a fool to wwait for you to get your shit together; and
no one stopped playing while I defended my challenged guesses. If
you didn't want me to guess again, you should have refrained from
entering a guess.

I have to disagree with Kent quite strongly. Not all of us have huge
dictionary resources; if someone picks a word that's not in my dictionary,
and the rule is that I can't even *guess* a word that I don't have a
reference for, then I have absolutely *no hope* of winning. I didn't
expect those guesses to be scored if they weren't correct, but I do
think that absolutely they should have been winners if they *were*
correct.
