Well I'll admit that when I last posted that I thought I knew what the
word was, it was a bit hasty. rcurl knows this because I mailed him
my guess, revealing my underestimation of this word. I haven't
posted a guess since katie's enabled me on Sun afternoon, mainly
because I got too busy with other things.

I really thought it was menus at the time. It's amazing how the mind
locks onto one possibilty when others abound. Sigh.

Nevertheless I will not follow rcurl's advice of trying to figure out
the letter, for two reasons. (1) This is competitive. At this point if
my guess reveals any clue it does so to all, and I will enjoined from
solving the puzzle. I think the slightest clue will give this one away.
(2) There is still a perfectly good English word that fits and so I will
guess it.

nexus (a joining point)

I cannot find "lepus" in 3 dictionaries (including unix:webster on MTS),
except as the proper name Lepus for a stellar constellation. Proper names
are not allowed in Letter Match. Please cite your reference for lepus.

Steve, you have just accomplished what you abjured - giving others a
clue. Guesses giving clues cuts both ways, of course. Your guesses give
others clues, and their guesses give them to you. This game is therefore
one of both skill and strategy.

Rane, That is as may be. And I will likely lose this game now.
(Unless someone helps me out by guessing a word without winning).
However I contend that when the choices are down to just 1 or 2 words
you are better off going for a solution than a letter.
Had I guessed "menus" way back before katie did, It would have
been an error in strategy, because there were more words available
than I realized (than we all realized, I suspect). I'm not sorry
I used the strategy I did when I guessed "nexus". I only wish I
had chosen a different word. :-)

I didn't guess menus; chelsea did. My guess, genus, was simply to test
the three letters, rather than being a guess at the word, as I knew there
was no g or n already.

I'm still stumped; my dictionary doesn't confirm any of the remaining
possibilities.

Well, if all else fails, find a better dictionary.

nevus

If this is the work I'll be sorta bummed 'cause it's more a medical
term than part of lay language.

Sorry, katie. I confused your response with chelsea's.
I think the game is over now.

(Like I said, lepus is a Latin word. Hence the name of the constellation.)

(If you want an English language source, there is a movie on in a few
minutes called "Night of the Lepus." Don't watch it, it's terrible. >8)

negus 5 (katie)

Congratulations, katie!

For anyone that doesn't want to look it up, negus has two meanings.
One is the term for a king of Ethiopia (an English term, that is),
and the other is a form of hot-mulled-wine (names after a 18th
century gentleman, Col. Francis Negus. One of the reasons the Brits
lost the war of 1775.

The word "negus" is one of the words that I mentioned earlier that
satisfied all the clues to "pygmy" in the prevous game. I chose to
"guess" pygmy, rather than "negus", because I thought it more likely.

Take it away, katie.
