Richard Thompson is supposed to have done the soundtrack for a recent film
titled "Sweet Talker." One track from this soundtrack appeared on a recent
Thompson CD single, and another is reported to have appeared on a Capitol
promo disc. Does anyone know *anything* about this film, or the soundtrack
from it? *whimper*

The latest Richard Thompson CD single contains three songs recorded for
"The Maxwell House Coffee House Show," whatever that is. Does anyone know
about this radio program? It's probably been broadcast already, sigh.
The new issue of DIRTY LINEN has a review of recent albums on which Thompson
did session work. The one I'm the most curious about is a new album by
Willie Nile; anyone know much about him?

What else is on the Thompson CD-single (and is it a domestic release?)
Are the songs new or are they live versions of older songs? How is it?

The solo acoustic songs on the "Read About Love" CD single are:
"I Feel So Good", "I Misunderstood", and "The Choice Wife". The first
two songs appear in full band arrangements on RUMOR AND SIGH; the third
is an instrumental which originally appeared on the FIRST LIGHT album
as a lead-in to "Died for Love".
The "country of origin" is interesting on this one. It appears to have
been manufactured in England; however, US Capitol has slapped a new US
bar code sticker over the UK bar code (under the shrink wrap), and it is
priced as a US domestic single, $5 at Tower, more at Schoolkids of course.
Probably worth getting if you're a Thompson fanatic and liked the SMALL TOWN
ROMANCE album. Not essential, though.

I don't know if I'm a Thompson "fanatic", but I did like "Small Town
Romance". I'll probably pick it up. If I don't like it I'll only be
out $5. I tend to buy CD singles if there's as much as a 50/50 chance
that I'll like it since I much prefer shelling out a few bucks now to
kicking myself later for having missed the opportunity. I hate it when
you decide you want something *after* it's gone out of print.

If you decide you hate it, I can probably take it off your hands for
Colm Mulcahy; he said he might want a second copy of it. (He and I are still
feeling burned by the 1989 CD single for Thompson's "Reckless Kind", which
appears to have had an in-print lifetime of two weeks or less.)

I wouldn't say I hate it but I'm certainly not thrilled with it.
The live version of "I Feel So Good" is pretty lame, and while the live
version of "I Misunderstood" is OK, it's not that much different from
the album version, except that the guitar is a bit more muted.
"The Choice Wife" is also OK, but not particularly exciting.
On the other hand, I don't really care. If I'd paid big bucks for it
I'd probably be miffed, but it was reasonably cheap and probably worth
having in the long run.

If he doesn't already know this, Ken will be excited to learn that
there's a new album of Thompson's music out. It's the soundtrack to
the movie "Sweet Talker" (that we got a sneak preview of on the "I
Feel So Good" CD single..)

I believe Ken bought this the day it came out. While not
unpleasant, it is obviously music from a *movie*, and not
the same thing as a regular Richard Thompson album.

Yes.. I like the song "Put Your Trust In Me", but the rest of the
album is too "soundtrackish" for me to enjoy very much.

(It came out May 5. I was at Schoolkids at 11 a.m. :-)
Yes, it's a soundtrack, but some of the instrumentals are pleasant
echoes of the "Strict Tempo!" album.)

Leslie told most of what I know. According to my correspondent who's
writing a book on Thompson and Fairport, RT is slated to record a solo
acoustic album for release by the end of the year, and then he's supposed
to immediately begin work on an album with band as a proper followup to
RUMOR AND SIGH.
Also, my correspondent confirms that Joe Boyd is compiling a boxed set
of Thompson material for Rykodisc. A staff person at Schoolkids who I
talk to a lot told me that WCBN contributed some live material from Ark
shows to this boxed set. I haven't heard anything about a release date.
Finally, Thompson is touring this summer, most likely just himself and
an acoustic guitar. There is a New York date around July 10 and a Chicago
date on July 15, so any Ann Arbor stop would likely be around those dates.
I will of course post any hard news I get on an Ann Arbor or Detroit date.

Our latest Ark schedule shows no Richard Thompson dates, alas.
Has anyone heard of anything in SE Michigan?

As I was listening to WCBN on the way in to work this morning, I'm
pretty sure they announced a Richard Thompson show (with Pentangle)
at the Majestic Theater. Unfortunately, it took a second for this to
register and I had most of my attenion focused on I-94's potholes,
so I didn't catch any other info (such as date, time, ticket price, etc..)

If we'd pushed our schedule a bit harder we'd have been able to catch
Richard Thompson opening for Mary Chapin Carpenter in DC on Saturday...
oh well. And of course we missed the Thompson/Pentangle show; I think
that's the first Thompson show I've missed in SE Michigan since 1984.
(We missed the Oysters at Alvin's too. I'm turning into a real slug.)

Might as well poke this album to keep it alive. The long-rumored Richard
Thompson boxed set is slated for March or April, depending on which source
you listen to.

The impression I have is that it will be about 60% already-released
material, 40% live tracks. Reportedly Thompson did not want any studio
outtakes to be used; in fact, the two Thompson albums which had
studio outtakes added to their CD versions have lost them in the most
recent pressings, at least according to the outer packaging.

Which two albums were those? Were the outtakes any good?
I think I'm probably with Thompson on this one -- I trust him to
know what material isn't good enough to make the albums and I don't
particularly want the record company using it to try and coax more
money out of me..

The albums which lost their bonus tracks were HAND OF KINDNESS -- the track
was "Where The Wind Don't Whine", which was expendable -- and SHOOT OUT
THE LIGHTS -- the track was "Living in Luxury", which was pretty good.
On the other hand, the new issue of SUNNYVISTA *gained* a bonus track,
a single-only release of "Georgie On A Spree". Go figure.

The Richard Thompson boxed set is allegedly scheduled for a May 4
release, according to I.C.E.
The Hokey Pokey folks (the UK Richard Thompson fanzine) have produced a
third benefit CD. This one consists of various UK folkies covering
Thompson's songs. I assume Green Linnet will release this one as they
did the previous two Hokey Pokey benefit discs.
Dave Burland also has an album out consisting entirely of Thompson
covers. The title is HIS MASTER'S VOICE. Dirty Linen magazine has a
few copies.
According to a well-placed Usenet source, the Capitol Records RT tribute
album is on indefinite hold; apparently attempts to make June Tabor
palatable to a mass audience are straining their tiny minds.
