In response #24, matts said:
> There was no R&B, and this was
> the greatest thing. Thanx to rap, we now have MTV, and all it's shitty
> music.
MTV was "thanks" to such POP greats as the Eurhythmics, Depeche Mode,
Madonna, Michael Jackson, Bruce Springsteen, Talking Heads/David Byrne,
Pat Benata, Janet jackson, Miami Sound Machine, John Cougar Mellencamp,
John Fogerty, A-Ha, Tears For Fears, Prince, Motley Crue, Guns N' Roses,
Metallica, Run DMC, New Edition, Devo, and Van Halen/David Lee Roth, just
to name a few. Your assertion that MTV is "thanx to rap" REEKS of blatant
bigotry. Also, there was PLENTY of R&B in the 80's, and it wasn't much
"better" than it is now. "R&B" (hardly blues at all; mostly a catch-all
phrase for "Negro music") is a matter of taste, and it's one that most
don't care for at this point in time ('twas quite popular in the Motown
years, and quite decent too). I really think you ought to take a look at
whatever show that is they show on MTV now with Martha hosting, and see
how many rap videos are aired. I'll bet that there aren't ANY.
Granted, MTV is now mostly sugar-coated rap/alternative/metal/pop, but
there are still good bands that recieve air time, even if it's not as much
as they might deserve.

Personally, I devotedly watch MTV - between midnight and two
AM Monday morning, for "120 Minutes", which is where all the
videos I like have been relegated. Still, it's nice to spend
some time watching Tori Amos, the Rollins Band, NIN, Sarah
MacLachlan, and Sonic Youth all in one sitting. >8)

I'm usually amazed by the various good music I'm only now hearing, and
then learning that it's FROM the 80's! :)

re#24: Oh poor dear matts...you missed out on sooooo much.
re #25: Carson, first of all I refuse to comment on "Negro Music", but I will
comment that you are wrong to state there was no Rap in the 80s. What about
"AntRap" by Adam Ant? Or "Rapture" by Blondie? Or the SugarHill Gang (1982)?
Or how about all the music everyone did breakdancing to? It wasn't _called_
Rap per se, but it was basically. Now personally I hate most 90s rap, but
you have to note its predecessors. You yourself stated you are amazed by
the music "...I'm only now hearing, and then learning that it's from the 80s"
thus you just may not be aware of what some of us experienced first hand. I
don't mean for this to sound bitchy, only informative. Because of the resurg-
ance of 80s music (and gradually fashion trends...look at the new VOGUE!)
there are sooo many people thinking "Cool Song!" when many of us can only
think "Yeah, loved it the first time around!"
We were just discussing if anyone thinks we'll see such forgotten favourites
come back such as skinny knit or leather ties? Or how about shirts (esp.
ripped off-the-shoulder ones) w/Japanese lettering across them? Or such
attractive looks as muscles shirts and legwarmers?????? (ahhhhhhhhhh!)

This reminds me of what a 16 year old kid I used to work with once said,
around the time Wayne's World came out:
'Hey, did you hear that *new* song, _*Bohemian Rap Singer*, by that *new*
group, Queen.?'
I could not contain my laughter, and I still can't when I remember this.

Matt in #24: In the earlier 80's, MTV was often criticized for
ignoring black music styles. I suspect MTV was quite surprised when
they eventually programmed a rap show, and it became a hit.
But rap is certainly not responsible for MTV, nor MTV for rap.
You mentioned your appreciation of Talking Heads, who are also
favorites of mine. Their breakthrough hit, "Take Me To The River",
was a cover of an Al Green song, and I don't think you can get
much more R&B than that.
I still remember the Heads' dazzling 1983 show at Pine Knob -- on a
cool breezy August night, a much tighter show than the one filmed later
on the tour for the STOP MAKING SENSE movie. I remember thinking how
wonderful it would be to have new Talking Heads albums to get old to.
Little did I know that the 1983 tour was, for all intents and purposes,
The End.

re #28: I didn't mean to imply that rap was not around in the 80's
(because
it very much WAS), but rather that it was hardly a significant
part of MTV's programming. I don't think rap started getting
any significant airplay on MTV until Tone Loc's "Wild Thing", and
didn't really blow up until Hammer's second album and Vanilla
Ice's "Ice Ice Baby".
Besides, when I think of the 80's, I don't really think of rap. I didn't
begin listening to it until '88, and when I think 80's, I think early to
mid-80's. :)

um, I didn't. I knew that "My Sharona" was on the _Reality Bites_
soundtrack, and they were on some late night show (don't remember which).
What's the title of it?
BTW, I *do* care what happened to Rick Springfield. I know that he was in
a daytime soap, and had pretty much moved from music to acting. Maybe
he'll do the Meatloaf thing? (Ugh!)

What I typed really came out wrong. Okay, R&B killeed MTV. MTV rokked in the
mid eighties. Oh, I also blame hard rock (whitesnake, Warrent..ech!) fpor
it;'s demise into old out hell. Every new white group is Alternative to
MTV. Seriously. Phukk, ACE OF WUSS was considered alternative, I first
saw it as a buzz clip. If there not black, they must be alternative.
DOES THIS NOT SUCk? I am not racist, but I hate R&B. I hate the rap.
I HATE IT ALL!!! bring back video's to MTV. Hey, do any of you remember,
lets see, about 5 years ago when MTV played...o migosh...Videos! hard to
believe , but true. There was not lame attempts at talkshows, danceparties,
skin fests, sitcoms, documentries, news, 900-what the phukk clones. None!
They played Videos! NO FREE YOUR MIND! NO MOTOR VOTER! god, those were the
days. ANyone want the old MTV back? I do!!!!!!!!!!!
the 80's rocked. Enough said.

The Knack album is called "Serious Fun" and is apparently loaded with the
same pedophiliac tinged pseudo-music that feuled their first release.
RE: #40 I too long for the return of a video driven MTV they should recieve
the Kings of Drift award for the amount of deviation from what they
originally started out to be. The funny offshoot of this is, back when
VH1 started out, MTV was still riding the last wave of it's coolness and
VH1 was playing utter crap, mellow, boring, elevator music. Now, if I have
a music station on in my house, it's going to be VH1 looooong before I
allow MTV to be played on my set! Funny how things change around...
I WANT MY OLD MTV!

As _juggler_ will attest, I keep trying to answer this one, but keep
getting interrupted in mid-thought train. Being a natural blonde, this
also wipes all of my thought processes clear. Let's hope that I can get
through this time. :>
If my life were to be recorded and played back to future generations, it
would be a John Hughes film and all of my lines would be improvisations
off of the other character's improv's off of my improv's...etc...etc...
The soundtrack would encompass ALL of the 80's music genres. My
introspective music would be: Japan, Roxy Music, and Bauhaus. My
rebellion music would be: Ramones, Violent Femmes (oooh! My mother used
to HATE them!!), and the Dead Kennedys. My Never-Mind-the-Mainstream-
This-is-Really-Quite-Good selections would include: DuranDuran, Adam
Ant, and Depeche Mode. Then there's the Party-Past-Cerfew selections of:
Van Halen, Journey, and REO Speedwagon. (To carson if you're out there-
I actually SAW NightRanger LIVE and in concert. They were great!!)
Husker Du, and Oingo Boingo!! Special soundtrack appearances would go to
Flesh for Lulu, Sisters of Mercy, Tones on Tail, Suburbs, Madness,
Icicle Works, the Cult, Dokken, Arcadia, Killing Joke, Guadalcanal Diary,
Vitamin Z, Pseudo Echo (Atumnal Park, their first album), Echo & the
Bunnymen, ...... the list is endless ...... I must digress........
My mom always used to tell me that the sincerest form of flattery was
imitation. If this is the case, then the 80's should truly feel
flattered. It seems that every time a new group releases a new song
I'll hear something that reminds me of something from my youth.

Kimbii and I had the joy of living part of the 80s together (college life, ah
such sweet memories...well the ones we can remember anyway!) It was truly a
whirlwind of celebration and introspect. And I must recall the first time
punk existed (not like these so-called punk kids today!) My hair was every
colour under the sun, from pink to purple to red to indigo. and such music
as 7 Seconds, Circle Jerks, JFA, Suicidal Tendencies, and Sex Pistols (though
they were a continuation of the 70s) were interspersed w/Duran, Pseudo Echo
(How many years did we spend attempting to prove they did exist?), and others.
Others including RICK SPRINGFIELD thank-you! (I still own all of his LPs!)
BTW, did anyone other than us see the episode of Tales From the Crypt tonight?
Guest star: Adam Ant! :)

Why *doesn't* MTV play videos anymore? Rumor has it that several music
labels are organizing another (alternative [used correctly, BTW]) music
video station for the purpose of PLAYING music videos. I seem to remember
the argument being that because MTV loads itself up with such non-music
crap that the music isn't getting the exposure that these labels want. I
wish I could remember more about this off the top of my head. Maybe I'll
find something about it later and post it.
Believe you me, if this WERE to happen, I don't think I'd miss the 80s as
much. ;)

There are various public access video programs (though for some reason I don't
see any in the Detroit area?) There used to be a wonderful video show in
Flint that focused on the non-radio play groups.
We _were_ the MTV generation. Some say GenX, I say MTV. Don't you remember
spending hours in front of the set, waiting for a specific video because they
DIDN'T play the same ones over and over. Heavy rotation meant once an hour
at most! Remember seeing obsure tunes like "Fish Heads" or even clips like
"Time Warp" from Rocky Horror? I went to college to major in Music Journalism
only to have the industry fall out from under me mid-way through! I Want My
OLD MTV! I want to see VJs (ah Martha Quinn, Alan Hunter...) not "pretty"
faces playing stupid games! I want to see _real_ music news, and _real_
in-studio interviews. I fear the original concept of Music Television is lost
forever.
