I agree gerund. I just get my hackles up when a previously friendly conference
becomes a battleground without good reason... I had to get the comeback
syndrome out of my system, it's highly theraputic...

I know i'm drifting...
Same thing happened to me on a mailing list I subscribe to.
It's better to try and just keep quiet, or at least try not to resort to
person attacks.
I now end my drift.

One more thing - md, if you think Tori Amos is "pop music",
you have your head up your rectum.

back to the topic - I think I know what the "bad guys" are trying to say -
top 5 desert island discs don't necessarily have to be your favorite
(insert modern, popular, mainstream category here) songs and albums, but
rather music you can listen to over and over and still be able to
get something new out of it. (set grammar=odd) Things like classical
music (while it may not be your favorite) fit the bill really well -
you can listen to a Tchikovsky or a Mozart or a Beethoven dozens of times,
always picking up new details. Each time you gain insight into the
mind of the composer as he wrote the song. (set grammar.tenses=screwed)
Something like "Blondie" is easy to memorize, so you wouldn't necessarily
have to take this with you to the desert island :)
Pop music (or whatever category)=fun
Classical (or whatever)=valuable

Okay, I guess I understand your point a little better. The problem
is, I HATE classical music (except Mozart, I love weirdness as
you can tell from my TMBG fondness), and for most of the
allegedly "pop" albums I listen to, I do gain new insights on
repeated listenings.
It's the same problem as the old lady and her plants. When she
played classical, her plants thrived. As a control, she played
acid rock for some of her plants, and they withered. Yet,
strangely enough, there are plenty of people who play acid
rock, or whatever rock, and their plants thrive. So are the
plants responding to the music, or to the human reaction to
that music?
(Sorry I snapped, md, but Tori Amos is a goddess in my eyes,
and her music has absolutely nothing in it that I would
consider "pop". We can discuss this in email, if you like.)

back to what this item was meant for...
here are my top 5 cd's/records
1. Night Kings _Icreasing_our_High_
2. Mudhoney _Every_good_Boy_desreves_Fudge
3. the Monkeywrench _Clean_as_a_Broke_Dick_Dog_
4. Jaks _Fivenine_
5. Negative Aproach _Total_Recall_
Those are my 5 favorite records and cd's (in no special order) They'll
probably change... oops I would like to change the last one to 5. the
Specials _The_Specials_ as I was sayin' they'll probably change as soon as I
get new records/cd's.

Bravo to Scheme for getting this back on track!!!! But I do want to add just
one final note to all this. Something is valuable as long as it means some-
thing to the individual. It can also be fun, the two do not have to be
mutually exclusive. Now back to the topic at hand....

If you're on a desert island alone, then Narcissism is the only emotionally-
satisfying option. Thus, I'd bring my own album, and all three (well 2 and a
half) MayTricks albums, and... well, hell.... I'll cut another one...

No need to apologize, whoever it was who apologized up there.
I got the response I expected. (I definitely didn't expect
anyone to love what I said, with a few exceptions.)

The rest of the stuff sounds great too!

Yeah, man, Bowie rox. "Sane" is one of my favorites. Have you heard the
alternate version of "Panic In Detroit" from "Scary Monsters?" It's really
funny.

Yah, I really kinda like it. Too bad the "REAL" Bowie is dead and now there
is an evil clone with ABSOLUTLY NO TALENT releasing albums in his name.
I think that he died right before "Let's Dance" don't you???

I was going to start the exact same survey- kudos to whomever started it
first (Sorry, I can't scroll back to your initial message, the list is too
long...)
RE #41: caesar, I could not agree more... Inner Mounting Flame is
insane, have you listened to "Live at the Royal Festival Hall" or
"Shakti" by Macglaughlin? Both priceless...
My list: 1) Kind of Blue- Miles Davis: the most brilliant, beautiful
album I know of..
2) The Ultimate Collection (Disc 2)-John Lee Hooker: how can
one begin to describe "The Hook"?
3) Graceland- Paul Simon: fell in love with it when I was a tyke
back in '84.. don't know many of his others, suggestions?
4) Aja- Steely Dan: The best band around, and they're touring
soon... I'm there if I have to camp for a week...
5) Ritual de lo Habitual- Jane's Addiction: When I get frustrated
on the island, blasting "Three Days" will set me right as it always has...
and as an alternate:
6)Passion- Peter Gabriel: an insane musical journey...
Anyone- mail me suggestions of geat music, I'm hurting to listen to
mmusic I've never been exposed to..

Another Green World-Brian Eno, an album I could listen to millions
of times and hear something new each time
Red Heaven-Throwing Muses, some of the most intense emotional
"rock" music around, hey it's my island and I'll cry if I want to...
Exotica-Martin Denney, Lounge Jazz from the late 50s with Jungle
sounds & Hawain instruments, ideal island music
Velvet Underground & Nico- Just because...
A Big-10-8 Place-Negativland- Wacky tape collages for those zany
times in my island dwelling life.
Ofcoourse this leaves out much music I will miss from Laurie Anderson
to Ornette Coleman, to Bartok, but at least with these selctions island life
will be tolerable...
