Kill, Kill, Kill

response 26 of 96: Mark Unseen   Dec 28 16:43 UTC 1994

I was here when some of this came down.. I remember, distinctly, seraph
bouncing in and out of party somewhere around 11"00pm last night, demanding
that everyone there go read it. I blew it off.. I could feel that something
BIG was wrong, and that I was powerless to stop it, so I stayed in main
channel, and tried to keep a pair of bewildered Newbies from thinking that this
is how we always are on grex!
It's all the more a shame that katie is nowhere to be found to kill
this abomination.

I think it is unanimous, that this item should be killed.

To Gerund and Bhelliom,

I'd guess most people here, seeing this item will withhold judgment, or
decide like I did that it is none of our business unless involved
directly. Your reputations are undamaged as far as I'm concerned, and I
think that the reasonable folk will agree. It would be sad if this caused
you to leave Grex, because most of us really try to be decent human beings
and are disgusted with what we just saw. Please reconsider.

If either or both of you need an impartial person to talk to, I'm
available and willing to listen. My name is Chris Bartlett, and you can
write me here as "bartlett".

Unfortunately, it has been the practice never to delete a post or an item,
though I'm not sure I've ever seen anything so actionable posted here.

     Chris, the saddened.

It's obvious that:
a) I am going to be a dickhead like usual and babble where I'm not wanted.
b) I'm basically going to say everything else that everyone else said.
c) this is truly none of my business or anyone else's except the names
mentioned
d) bhelliom did not write that because..wait lemme re phrase taht..
"bhelliom" DID (apparently, even though I can't seem to find any
of that in the party.log!) write that. BUT it was not the REAL
bhelliom (Real Life Syl Copeland typing that from her kb)
e) bhelliom was online at the time of that happening, except
she was online when that supposedly occured, except
apparently something is fishy about that login.
She always logins from rmm3.merit.edu and for 3 occasions she
was on a dialin for some odd reason. One of those 3 was the
time this suppsosedly took place.
bhelliom ttyp0 rmm3.merit.edu Tue Dec 27 21:21 - 00:47 (03:25)
bhelliom ttyh2 Tue Dec 27 20:45 - 20:54 (00:08)
bhelliom ttyh2 Tue Dec 27 19:05 - 20:11 (01:05)
bhelliom ttyh3 Mon Dec 26 00:27 - 02:29 (02:02)
bhelliom ttyp0 rmm2.merit.edu Sun Dec 25 17:02 - 17:05 (00:02)
bhelliom ttyq3 rmm2.merit.edu Sat Dec 24 15:59 - 17:04 (01:05)
bhelliom ttyq0 35.1.48.193 Fri Dec 23 23:37 - 00:19 (00:41)
as you clearly see. Unless for some strange reason that bhelliom could not
get access to the her provider or didn't feel like it, then it isn't her.
Which I'm pretty sure that i recall someone saying they were online at that
time as her, but were idle. That obviously is going to point some fingers,
but I have extreme doubts on that too because that person doesn't act
in party like that.
e
e) I'm all sure we want to kill this item because it has no real purpose
in anything except to make a person, who we obviously know, is innocent
because of witnesses, (make a person) look bad. I'd hate to see such
a nice and lovable/loved grexer get persecuted for nothing. And
I'd REALLY hate to see her stop calling Grex.
f) it's also safe to say that I like putting things in order by using letters
g) I'm wasting your time by writing statement g
h) I'm in a hyper mood
i ) Have a Nice Day =)

response 33 of 96: Mark Unseen   Dec 28 20:04 UTC 1994

I really hoped that Grex staff would have a little more insight here.
I'm not sure now, in fact now I think it's been too long and any
damage that can be done is probably QUITE done.
I had hoped this would have been deleted before it could do that damage.
Apparently Grex staff believes anything goes here.
I'm not sure anymore if this is a philosophy or a system I want to be
assoiciated with anymore.

Sadly, I have to agree with gerund.. Why should this haunt him and
Bhelliom any longer than necessary? Kent, to "forget" it is fine for those of
us who have already seen it, but what about those who HAVN'T? They will still
read it, and Bhelliom and gerund will never hear the end of questions about
it from "newbies". Why do that to them, by keeping this thing alive?

response 35 of 96: Mark Unseen   Dec 28 21:34 UTC 1994

Why don't we just write a letter to seraph and ask him to scribble it?
I'm sure he's getting enough heat from this, he may just want to forget
about it too.

response 36 of 96: Mark Unseen   Dec 28 21:46 UTC 1994

I have only 3 things more to say(that has prettymuch already been said..but I
want to make the point a little more clearer... 1) The GREX staff should
STRONGLY consider deleting this... 2) Anyone reading this should forget it!!
3) I hope that newusers reading this knows that this kinda stuff dosn't really
happen on here....(I hope) I also hope that Bhelliom (and anyone else thinking
about leaving over this incodent..) would reconsider....We all belive this to
be a stupid and childish act....
  Please stop this maddness.....

Once, on M-net, a good while ago, the password file was cracked, and
someone entered an item under my login. It looked to everyone like
it was mine but I wasn't even in the state when it was entered.

I simply made a response explaining the situation, changed my password
immediately, and went about my business. No one seemed to doubt the
honesty of what I was saying. My honor remained intact. Life went on.
I didn't ask anyone to step in and play item-killer or to take care of me
or my reputation.

When you make this a huge deal you might not be acting in your own best
interest. Take a deep breath. Calm down. Think through what you'd
really like to accomplish at this point.

response 41 of 96: Mark Unseen   Dec 28 23:31 UTC 1994

Yeah.
Sure.
How can you be so glib?
You have NO IDEA what this has done to three people.
It's hurt even more than that.
It is practically slander and i can't believe that Grex actually supports this.
If I was in any state of mind to do something about it I'd be consulting
a lawyer about slander charges.

response 42 of 96: Mark Unseen   Dec 28 23:33 UTC 1994

And not just at all for me....
I'm as rotten as this potrays me to be, all the right people know that.
But Sylvia and Sun didn't deserve any of this, and still you will
not remove it. I can't stay in a place that does this.

Gerald, what Mary is saying makes a lot of sense. It's probably the
best thing to do, too.
Yes, we *could* delete the item, but then others will want other
items that they feel have tarnished them gone, and then another, and...

I don't know that there is a "good" solution to this. But I'm thinking
that a deletion is probably not as good.
If people let this grow in size, it will.

response 46 of 96: Mark Unseen   Dec 29 02:25 UTC 1994

You know, whatever the story behind all of this is, this item has just killed
a lot of things. The only reason why I am leaveing grex, after changing
my password of course, is because a certain someone doesn't really believe me.
Not about this. I think this mystery person I'm talking about knows ecactly who
did this. I gave my Id to you out of good faith. I can't believe that it stayed
on idle, especially given the fact that this conversation took place when my
account was in use. All I know is through circumstances beyond my control, my
reputation on this system has been destroyed. Not necessarily amoong you who
have voiced your supp -ort, but to one who is in this mess as well. Granted
there are some things we need to sort out, but do you even want to? All I know
is that I had no part of it. BUt I think I know who did. Especially since there
was only one person who told him about the circumstances. How can I stay here
when someone I thought was supporting me through all this (and vice versa) had
decided to derag my name through the mud. I suppose I could get petty and drag
my MOTHER over to the computer so she coul d for me, but that would suggest a
lack of strength on my part. So thanks a lot, and you know who you are. YOu got
your wish. I'm only going to be here to monitor my conference, and hopefully to
turn it over to someone else in due time. WHen I have the strength to do so,
I'll have this account erased. I don't feel welcome anymore, after coming to
certain conclusions about this whole mess. To all of those who care, I love you
all. We'll keep in touch.

Damn... 46 slipped in.
I'm leaving too, as if it wasn't a given.
I'll be around long enough to clean out my directory, and
say goodbye to some people, and let them know how to stay in touch.
(if they want to)
My small part in the lit conference won't be missed.

There isn't anything else to say.

Agora is the "marketplace of ideas". The principle behind that concept
is that people should be exposed to all sorts of different viewpoints,
and then be free to make up their mind based on the facts presented.
It is not the desire of the Grex staff to prejudge any viewpoint, or
to attempt to filter what the users see.

However, Grex also has some legal responsibility in this, though I'm
not sure of the specifics. (Perhaps Aaron Larson, if he's around and reading
this, could clarify the points that I leave vague.) It was my impression
that a business which owns a restroom was not responsible for the
graffiti that might be written on the restroom walls. However, if
something slanderous (in the legal sense of the word) is written on the
walls, and this is brought to the attention of the business and they
do nothing about it, then they become responsible for the slander and
can be sued. Although the connection between Grex and bathroom walls
is somewhat tenuous, I can't help but wonder whether the analogy holds
in this case. I didn't read through all of the item text, because I
really have no desire to participate in what is clearly the airing of
dirty laundry in public. However, if the item could be considered
legally slanderous, then I really have to wonder whether Grex has
a responsibility to remove it from public view, now that its presence
has been brought to the attention of the board.

[Note that I'm not speaking for staff here, just my own opinions.]
