1. Our older boy went through a trivial version of this, a few weeks ago.
His grandfather took him for a haircut, and his hair was cut *much* shorter
than expected! (We his parents didn't recognize him as he was getting off
the airplane!) He *hated* it, and kept telling people so as they said
"Great haircut!" At least hair grows out, though.

2. Suggested remarks for dealing with unwanted congratulations: "Thank you.
[omit thanks if it seems appropriate] The weight loss is just a side effect
of treating some health problems; it's nice to feel better, but *I*
didn't choose to be thinner." [optionally, add: "and I don't agree that
thinner is necessarily better."]

3. As one who has always been relatively thin (I'm about 5'8" and about
118 pounds) I am interested in fat grams more for my husband than myself.
But it seems a pity that so many people think of nutrition *only* in
terms of fat.

Thanks, Grace. That's a much more gracious way of saying what I meant. I
don't think thanks are inappropriate. As valerie said, these people are
trying to be nice -- I just didn't know quite what to say to get my point
across without a diatribe.

Ah, the pint size troubles I have, eh? <grin>

Misti -- Cool. It makes me feel good that someone I know can really use them.
I'll hang onto the stuff. Kae came over and kifed the jeans since she's
*desperate* for them...any size, but I still have a few skirts and a really
nice business suit-like vest and skirt that fit a 22. Just e-mail me when
you're ready for all of it.

OK, I will. I have to go do my measurements and lookup what size I am
now. (That should be amusing.)

I have no size what I am at any given time. I don't even know how much I
weigh these days.

Misti, I'm afraid I don't have any suggestions but I have an inkling of
what you're going through, having lost a good deal of weight myself. It
is odd to suddenly lose weight-based-tug-of-wars and have friends be able
to lift you off the ground. A few months ago, there was a very windy day
when I swore I was going to be lifted up by the wind and carried away. I
had never felt that way before.

But I have more energy now than I have in years. Healthy eating is
certainly a good thing. I wasn't trying to lose weight; it just happened
when I started watching what I ate.

Hang in there and remember you have the support of lots of grexers.

Thanks, abchan. I doubt I'll ever lose *that* much weight <g> but it's
good to know that someone else has been there. (At my most slender, in
my late teens, I weighed 130.)

Sarah, I'm wearing a size 20 blouse that I dug out of my closet today.
Maybe it's time. I'll send you e-mail to arrange it. (Misti swoons
with shock -- 3 sizes in 4 months?)

I always got paranoid when my thinner gal friends yammered about being fat or
whatever, because then I thought, "Well if THEY think they are fat, what do
they think of me?". It did make me uncomfortable. I think that's a reason why I
am attracted to tall, husky guys, because they make me feel so small in
comparison, physically. Whenever I hugged a smaller guy, even just in a
friendship context, I'd feel like I was a giant. For the longest time I
slouched without realizing it. I know that 5'9" isn't huge, and I've come to
like being tall... mainly because my grandmother had been almost 6', and I am
so glad to know I take after her in that respect. But last night I was with
relatives and we were standing in a group, and I was either as tall as everyone
or taller... it seems the rest of the women got the short genes :)

I'm shrinking?

Yippee! I feel so weird having all these clothes without some use for them.
I should be able to bop over to A2 on a Sunday since it's my day off, and I've
been meaning to get over there to visit. Go ahead and mail me with a good
date for you, and I'll make a note of it.

Depends. Are you planning to bring fruit salad, or a chocolate layer
cheesecake full of mini-truffles?

A celebration of lsoing weight is a little wierd. Lets just have a
potluck. At my new house!

People start to shrink at 30?

Oof. That's a relief.
And when is it that your ears are starting to grow (in fact I think it is the
head that's shrinks and the ears don't.?
Old people always seem to have big ears. I like my ears as they are now: neat.
Btw, it appears that tummys also start to grow when above thirty, especially
in men. :)

I was always measured as 5 feet 5 1/2 until a few years ago. Now, I seem to
be measuring in at 5 ft 4 1/2. I believe it has to do with compression of the
spinal bones and decrease of the size of bones due to loss of calcium. The
biggest problem is losing height while gaining weight (and not fitting into
clothes).

Actually, I've heard that both ears and noses continue to grow, which is
why older peoples faces have slightly different proportions than do
younger peoples faces. Dunno whether it's true -- but I heard it on
NPR. ;)

I guess, that my interpretation could be caused by the process of
selffullfilling prophecy.
Once I started to notice that there were old people with huge ears, each
time came/come across old people with these ears I say:
"See, what did I tell ya?"
On the other hand, I also rather not have my nose grow. They match with
my ears and the rest.
Tell you something, I started off training to get rid of my surplus in
midsection. Of course I already has gotten out of hand: I can barely
stand up straight due to muscle aches. I am curious whether I've
got enough self discipline to keep it going.<grin>

New idea for plastic surgery.
Homeopthic lyposuction,
it is done by canibals using a straw. :D

A potluck sounds groovy. I announced in Agora that I was thinking about lunch
out somewhere before I read this, so disregard it. =) Either thing would
be fun. I haven't been to A2 on a social visit in a while.

response 49 of 200: Mark Unseen   Nov 2 19:32 UTC 1997

As far as i can tell, it's slowed down a bit. Maybe even stopped. <whew>
Finally a chance to ajust!

Thanks for asking, Trisha!
