Well, I have an attache-style book bag that I use as a briefcase most days.
It usually carries my lunch, Newton, aspirin, spare batteries (for the Newton),
and minimal tools like one of those multi-tool things and a little PC
screwdriver. I also recently got a day pack for larger loads and travelling.
In general I don't carry anything except when I'm going to work or need to
have something along for a specific purpose.

I *do* have a very specific pocket organization, which varies on old pairs
of shorts with leaky pockets.

A fanny pack isn't a good solution for me. I weight in at something beyond
250 lbs and have yet to find one that will go around me.

Misti, I can make the straps longer on one if you really want a fanny pack.

Umm, thanks, Scott. I appreciate the offer -- but how would you do that?
sewing on more webbing?

Something like that. Or just make a strap up to add to one of the others (not
the first choice, since it adds yet another annoying/painful buckle to the
rig). Anyway, this is drift, so email if you are interested.

Doesn't <bg> stand for background?
In which case it needs not to be ended with a </bg>
(I'll look it up somewhere)

There's no <bg> tag. You may be thinking of a couple of
attributes to the <body> tag that have to do with backgrounds:
"background" and "bgcolor":

  <body background="pattern.gif">

to display a graphic image as the background to the document,
and

  <body bgcolor="green">

to specify a background color.

(Please pardon the techie digression; back to handbags, maybe?)

it appears that most of you handbag-types generally
choose function instead of fashion.
i doubt you buy a new bag every month or so to keep up
with what is trendy.

I buy a new one only when my old one breaks.

Keep up with what is trendy??? Hah! This bird still looks like a character
from _The Breakfast Club_. ;-)

Trends are what entrepreneurs want to follow, but
it's nothing more than a road to nowhere.

- and if I could type it would have read: want us to follow

btw, trends could be another item

I couldn't be bothered to change handbags every day or even every week
(specially not with all the stuff I carry in mine), so I change them
seasonally (except for the rare occasions when I get dressed up and want my
purse to match my outift. I also buy a good coach bag with an open slot in
the back for my daytimer and I keep it until it falls apart. One good thing
about buying a bag that expensive is, you can bring it back and Coach will
fix almost anything for free. I didnt know they would recondition the bag.
My current one is looking dirty and I could get a few more years out of it
if I could get the darker color off along the rims.

My husband once broke the buckle of a Coach belt, years and years after I
cbought it. we brought it back to the store at Briarwood and even though it
was ancient and we hadn't bought it there, they gave him a brand new belt.

Also, I run up to the outlet store on 23 and try to buy Coach bags discounted.

I think it's fascinating how many different opinions there are on handbags
Personally, I keep a tiny black bag with me always. The contents are
all miniature versions of important stuff: dictionary, scissors, sewing
kit, mints, comb, hairspray, tape measure, address book, etc.
This talk of handbags has got me thinking... What about a party
with an emphasis on what's in your handbag - kind of like
'Let's Make a Deal'? If someone wants to have it at their house -
I'll go!

Every time I try to carry a handbag, I leave it somewhere. If I'm all dressed
up for whatever occasion, I will carry one, but I usually wear jeans and can
fit up to six things in my pockets that I need.

And if jeans won't suffice, why not wear army trouders? (Lots of pockets
there)

generally do not carry a handbag, but my bag that I keep in my car has
everything I need.

my essentials are:
keys, attatched to a swiss army knife with all sorts of useful doo-dads.
wallet, with the usual stuff that goes into there.
chapstick!! i think i am addicted, as i have been using it for over
15 years. <aside: i hear that it IS possible to become addicted because
your lips will stop producing natural moisture with prolonged use>
a few kleenexes when it is that time of the season.

Re 44 - I only recently started carrying a tape measure in my bag,
after several situations where I really needed a ruler of some sort.
