You've got my vote - unless others are buying too 8^}. There are
definitely items that can be archived, but many are ongoing (if not
eternal....) and should be kept.

Have we decided how we're going to decide to pick the person,
or whether the term is fixed or indefinite? We *really* should
do that.

My preference would be for a fixed term, max of two years.
In fact, I'll volunteer if that's the arrangement and if my
co-fw also agrees to a fixed term. Tsty?

(Oh, and if I get to design the next coop login screen. :)

I agree with that, and I would hope that people are voting with ability in
mind, rather then policy on certain things like how often should a restart
take place, or at all.

can we use the vote program for this?

response 29 of 97: Mark Unseen   May 11 23:40 UTC 1996

Half the ballots should be mailed - 25% to known addresses, and 25% to
general delivery, and all late. Half should be cast by consulting
a fortune teller or looking in fortune cookies, and the rest should
be done through the vote program. At least that is how some people
run elections, I have heard. Just thought you would like an example to go by.

I thought computer entrails would be used here.

I forgot the entrails! Yes, definitely the entrails must be consulted, and
before the sacrifice of the virgins (an archaic term, not used much anymore)
to the volcano. The "Election Committee and Shaman Society" thanks rcurl and
grants him one free potion or spell of his choice.

I really think an election is over-kill. Board should appoint. If the board
thinks there are several equally good candidates, hold a lottery.

(I agree with #35. Elections will stave off a lot of qualified people.)

Sacrifice of VIRGINS? *whew* For a minute, I was worried.

response 39 of 97: Mark Unseen   May 13 05:21 UTC 1996

I agree with appointment. In fact, this is the sort of thing usually
delegated to an officer - its hardly a whole-board matter, though the
officer could consult anyone she/he wishes.

Quick! Anyone who you care about who's a virgin, Selena! We must despoil them
before the sacrificing begins...

How about the issue of fixed terms?
janc
response 42 of 97: Mark Unseen   May 13 14:22 UTC 1996

I think fixed terms are a good idea.

Renewable? I don't think a person doing a good (even, acceptable) job
needs to be removed.

Renewable.

I dont want fixed terms, only because if I'm appointed/elected and a
new user/someone who doesnt have new user experience wants a chance I
would want the option to step down and designate my successor.
Because coop is a good training place for fw's and I wouldnt want to be
forced to stay on longer against my own judgement.

I had a good talk with mike (nephi) on party the other night and he
said he stepped down because he's basically not a confrontational type,
and that there are a lot of personal disputes related to coop that may
not be apparent from simply reading the conf.

When I first joined coop, mary was the fw and I dont think the conf has
been the same since she stepped down. Coop needs an fw who is willing to
to be involved and can convey to new readers that the conf is well
organized. I realize now that I was wrong in saying that coop doesnt
need an fw. Just talking to mike and getting a sense of the flak he's
had to put up with as fw tells me that somebody should be there who is
thick skinned enough to put up with bs but at the same time remain
committed to the conf.

And I am committed to changing the login screen. I figure the current
login screen can be dumped into bulletin or something. I'm not likely to
post any messages and ask for suggestions, I'll just argue with Tsty and
we'll come up with something that suits both of us and if there are any
objections we will deal with them.

Anyway thats my little spiel, Omni and I co-fw the newsline
(politics/world) conf and he'd be a terrific fw here too Im sure, and
Carson knows more grexers than anyone but Valerie so his qualifications
are obvoius. And if whats required is thick skin and the ability to not
take any crap, I cant imagine anyone better suited than Selena.

Sounds like we have a good slate of candidates here!

You're safe - no one can force a volunteer to do anything. Any volunteer can
resign any time, even with "terms". The system would just have to find
another fw.

Personally, I'm not woried about it. Terms or no, I am interested.

response 48 of 97: Mark Unseen   May 25 16:56 UTC 1996

So we gonna vote?
Since this is a touchy conf. I for one don't want people upset if they don't
get who they want so I suggest a point based system here for voting list the
candidates in order you would like to see low number wins, this also means
candidates can vote too for instance out our 4 cadidates I vote 1 carson, 2
Selena 3 Kerouac 4 omni, low score being carson, if tsty would keep track of
scores this rules out hostil fights as the best rounded candidate wins if
there is a tie unlikely the candidates can decided for themselves, or call
we vot again this ok <meak voice>

response 49 of 97: Mark Unseen   May 25 22:52 UTC 1996

I dont think there's any consensus that this should be an election...and
there shouldnt be an election without a consensus. Then again, I would
view the board making an appointment as wrong too since the Board doesnt
have anything directly to do with conferencing.....

I dont know what the solution is...maybe the fw'ship should be auctioned
off to the highest bidder at the auction
