I think it would be better if we did not use skin color or sex as
a consideration. Of course each voter can make up his or her own mind
as to what is important. I want to see a lot of *good* candidates
to choose from. I think there are many such people out there.

Re #24: kerouac, what do you mean? Valerie's being on the board does not
depend on her being president, much less on her running for president?

Ooops, I just assumed that you had to be an officer to be on the board,
and most people once they've been president of an organization dont
tend to want to step DOWN the ladder.

Not true, there are two former Presidents who are still
serving on the Grex Board of Directors, remmers and srw.

Sadly, I expect the reason 6/7 of the Board are white
males is that most Grex users *are* white males, as
indeed are most computer users. The ratios are shifting,
but it will take time.

IT may be useful to explain that the seven elected board members elect
the officers from among themselves.

In regard to officers not wanting to step "down the ladder" - exactly
the opposite is true. Being "just" a director is much easier. Being
an officer (unpaid) of a nonprofit is the extreme of volunteerism. There
is some pleasure in being able to help the organization function by
serving in an officer capacity, but there is usually some limit of
available time and energy, and most officers are quite happy to pass
the responsibilities to others after they feel they have served as well
as they can.

I know I will be happy to pass the treasurer's rubber stamp (the one I used
to endorse checks) on to the next treasurer. :)

Hey, if we need more diversity, why don't we just require that white males
comprise, say, no more than 50% of the people signed to to Grex at any
one time?

response 34 of 198: Mark Unseen   Aug 10 17:49 UTC 1995

The diversity profile of the board is even worse than Valerie
describes. The majority of the board consists of white males
over 40 and hence are not to be trusted in the slightest.

Help me understand -- is remmers proposing (obliquely) to link
this to the humor conf? Anyway, I figured out Valerie was
not a white male the first time I met her.

I think it should also be understood that the director who gets to be
called "president", is the one who got the short straw. :-)

(Does this mean, with the exception of Valerie, that the board lacks
vertical diversity as well? :-)

Actually, that's why Valerie is the president. Everybody ganged up on the
short person and she lost. :-)

Valerie used to be 5 feet 11, the pressures of the office caused
her to lose height. Hopefully, she will not disappear before
a successor is elected.

Anyone spending time in the dungeon is likely to lose weight. Say, we
might rent out time there, as a fund raiser.

I still don't understand what the color of a person's skin has to do
with "diversity." Is it symbolic or something?

response 43 of 198: Mark Unseen   Aug 11 23:45 UTC 1995

Re 41: thats entirely too true. I'm doing that just now.

While I agree with Steve (srw) that its really important to
have good candidates, I also agree with Valerie that it would
not be a bad thing to see more diversity on the board. If
anything, it might show others that you don't have to be a
white male to do things on Grex, and to have been thought
of as worthy. Certainly the computer field, and the on-line
field is too dominated by males.

response 45 of 198: Mark Unseen   Aug 12 02:52 UTC 1995

I echo Valerie's sentiments. I would really like to see more "diversity" on
Grex, in the computer-related fields, and on the board. The issue is not one
of a person's skin, but that people from different backgrounds usually bring
a different set of experiences and perspectives with them. This can be
valuable for examining a problem from several different angles; if all you
have is straight white males over 40, you'll only see the issue from one side.

response 46 of 198: Mark Unseen   Aug 12 03:10 UTC 1995

More statistics about the lack of diversity on Grex's board, which have
nothing to do with race:
- Three of the seven board members are named Steve
- Three of the seven are from New York

Well of course we need diversity...on the other hand, if Popcorn were
made benovelent dictator, it would save lots of board meetings hehe...
Just think of it, no more arguments, no more this and that. Of course
Popcorn wouldnt live long in such a role but just think of the peace!

response 49 of 198: Mark Unseen   Aug 12 04:25 UTC 1995

I don't know. You must all have some sort of special feature that lets
you look at a person's skin color and judge how "diverse" they are.

I think it's bullshit.
