If the meeting is made a little later, people could eat first, and there
would be less mumbling with full mouths. I checked into using AA Public
School facilities - and officially they charge $$.

The dungeon is a 6'x12' room with a 6'4" ceiling, in a dark and dank little
basement that has even lower spots in the ceiling in places. We didn't
call it the "dungeon" for nothing. When 3 staffers are there it gets crowded.

I guess I could get food on the way over, but I'm not sure I would. Oh

Let's plan on Zing's again this month.
Hey, I have a problem that I noticed particularly at the plan-the-budget
meeting. We seemed to be using a system of "whoever talks loudest gets
the floor". Well, not entirely, but I know Rob and I both felt we had a
hard time being heard. I'd appreciate advice about how to better make sure
everybody gets heard.

Well, you follow the Robert's Rules of Order (;->) prescription that the
*chair* recognizes who will speak. This does not interfere with anyone
having their say, but the chair can see to it that people are recognized
fairly. This usually means that persons asking to speak are recognized in
a fair order before someone that has spoken is recognized again.

I've never actually been to a board meeting, so I don't know what
they're like. The planning meeting was the first Grex meeting I
attended, and it just seemed occasionally chaotic, with louder
voices having an advantage. But that's just a first impression
from a novice Grex meetingist...it was kinda fun and got the job
done, so whatever works for folks!
I think a private meeting room with enough space to see everyone
would be nice, but it sounds like food availability is important.
Maybe it's because Grexxers need something to do with their hands
when they're away from keyboards for several hours? :)

Actually I would prefer Zingerman's, along with the ability of the
board to be able to banish load parties in 'our' room.

I really haate meeting at Zingerman's, to tell you the truth. The
noise level in there bothers me, and it encourages people to talk
loudly.

Yeah, I noticed that too Valerie. My suggestions are:
1.) Bring an electric cattle prod to the next meeting,
2.) Sit next to me,
3.) Use it on me liberally. :-)
Actually, I was kinda confused to see Srw apparently running a meeting
that you had called. How did that happen?

Um... I was kinda confused by it too, but he was doing such a good job
of it that I wasn't going to argue!
Best guess is that I've called staff meetings, with absolutely *no*
intention of being the meeting leader, so he was thinking I'd had that
meeting model in mind.

To address the meeting space issue, I'd like to ask all board members
and frequent board meeting attendees to answer the following questions:
1) Is it important to you to have food available at board meetings?
EZ Think answers:
A - Very important
B - Not critically important, but it's nice to have it available
C - Don't care
D - Food is a distraction; I would rather not have food there
E - Other (please explain?)
2) Would you like to continue meeting at Zingermans, when possible?
F - Yes
G - Don't care
H - No
3) What do you think of the noise level at Zingermans?
I - Too loud
J - Doesn't bother me
K - I, but if it bothers other people, let's meet somewhere else
4) Would it be OK with you to meet in the basement of the Michigan Union?
L - Yes
M - Don't care
N - Yucch!
(My personal answers are B H I and M).

I know the person that schedules rooms at Scarlett Middle School.
If people are interested, I could ask her about us using a room
(perhaps the library). Scarlett is located near Platt and
Packard and has lots of free parking. They don't sell food, but
I'm sure it would be okay for people to bring a snack with them.

Zing's is loud and there have been meetings where it's a real
problem. But I'm not sure the Union Food Court will be much
of an improvement in this area. So unless something becomes
available that we can be sure will work better I'd like to
continue to meet at Zing's.

I sure am offering a lot of intrusive suggestions lately. Someone
tell me to shut up or they're going to continue. (-: Here's another one:
If people can't get their opinions heard, use a roundtable type
method of deciding who gets to talk next. Give everyone a turn to speak,
in order, and don't be afraid to ask someone to stop if they're
incoherent, repeating someone else, or if they stray from the subject at
hand.

Here goes Mr. Public Transit being self contradictory: despite the i
inconvenience to all my soul mates who go most places afoot, I'd like to
suggest suggest the Village Kitchen at 241 N. Maple in the Maple Village
shopping center. Thats on Maple Rd. b. Jackson Rd (Huron) and Dexter Road.
Parkings a real hassle at the Union, and it's free, plentiful, and convenient
at the Village Kitchen. Also, traffic in the area is generally hassle free,
except the long light cycle at Maple & Jackson. The Village Kitchen is just
an ordinary traditional restaurant, nothing cutesy or ethnic, but the food's
pretty good, service friendly, & it's quiet. I think there's a back room.

My response to Valerie's survey #36: BHIN.
Hm. I'm familiar with the Village Kitchen. It hasn't been quiet
when I've been there. Seating in the main dining room consists of
fixed, immovable booths, so it couldn't accomodate a meeting of a
dozen people. I don't know if there's a back room -- if so, and
if we could reserve it, that might work, although I suspect they'd
charge for it.

Re 47: Thanks for the idea. I think it's a bit far from downtown
for a board meeting, since a number of people seem to show up on foot.
