re #24 Steve, Uh - would you explain why this is important,
and how it affects the program or system? I just want
to learn - and this has been a good discussion. Thanks.

re 24:
I didn't say that it wasn't configurable, and I have no idea
whether it is configurable or not. However, the way it is set up now is
standard, and I see no reason to change it. Since almost every other system
on the Net is using index.html as its standard, if Grex decided to use
homepage.html instead it could get pretty confusing for people coming here
from other systems.

re 26, scg - it is just a question of directory path conventions?

It's more a convention of filename conventions, but it's pretty much the
same thing.

A long time ago, before the standard was known to us as index.html,
Carl created a script that created a prototype home page for the
new html scripter. That script (mkhomepage) creates homepage.html,
not index.html.
Carl and I discussed this tonight (along with other staffers including mdw),
and Carl will change that script to begin creating index.html.
We will then begin the process of becoming more standard in our usage.

Is there an advantage to that? I am under homepage.html. Is that bad?
Also, is there an advantage to haveing ~peacefrg instead of just
peacefrg? I have heard talk of this recently too.

You might want to rename your "homepage.html" file to "index.html".
And if you sent mail to webmaster (or Carl or srw) to ask to be added
to Grex's list of homepages, you should send mail to webmaster to let
them know that you've renamed your file, so they can update the pointer
to it.

I've sent my homepage address to so many people at this point,
I'm just leaving where it is. I'm a programmer, I don't pay
attention to standards. >8)

If you've widely publicized your homepage as homepage.html (or anything
else besides index.html), you might want to link index.html to it. Or
rename to index.html & link from your earlier filename.

If you make it a hard link, then you don't have to worry
about which is the file and which is the link - it'll just
be two names for the same file.

Oh, how do I get my page off of the grex users list? My page is on
hold until I get PPP back, so I deleted everything out of my files.
People will just get a bad URL: error if they try to go into it.

Weren't your pages stored on Grex? You didn't need to delete
them...
In any case, as with all things relating to the list of users'
home pages, send mail to carl and he'll take care of it.

Cool. Though I must admit that Grexxer's have some of the lamest home
pages I ever did see. Not that mine is much better, but now at least I
have a place I can put stuff I don't necessarily want prospective
employers to see.

Agreed, Jan, but it is not just Grexers. Most people who have home pages
all around the web are not experienced enough with hypertext to
produce interesting and helpful pages. Most consist of a list
of pointers to other places that they like.

Gee, it's amazing what one can miss when one doesn't get a chance
to conference for a month. ;-)
I just updated mkhomepage so that it will create index.html (as
was mentioned above).
If you have run mkhomepage before and want to change the name of
your homepage to index.html, just run mkhomepage. It will
automatically rename your file--providing you don't have an
"index.html" and do have a "homepage.html" in your www directory.
I've automated this, since it was designed for use by people with
limited experience with Unix. Of course you can bypass or undo
anything that mkhomepage does directly.
