Being as I'm the fw of the "other" laundry conference over on M-Net,
I'll state that I have no objection whatever to there being one
here as well (not that it should make any difference if I objected
or not). I'm not interested in fw'ing a grex version though; there
should be a clean (har har) separation between the two.

Far be it from me not to take this opportunity shamelessly to plug
"my" laundry conference and announce that I recently revamped it
in line with Arbornet's edumakashunal mission. Check it out, risk-
free -- I'm not trying to take anyone to the cleaners.

There are a great number of grexers who never M-net and thus never
experience the wonders of the Laundry conf. This is *exactly* why I
proposed it; because clean clothes should be universal.

Let's give it a month and see how it flies, OK?

I think the laundry conference will start out being all wet, but during
the second phase become drier and drier.

Very carefully so as to avoid the flames.

M-Net is an older conferencing system, also located in Ann Arbor.
Around since 1983, it is one of the oldest systems of its kind, anywhere.
It is also the system where the twelve people who founded Grex came from.

You can reach M-Net by telnetting to arbornet.org, or dialing 996-4644.

If anything will douse flames, wet laundry will.

re: 32 - Twelve people who founded Grex - who might they be? Would you
name them for us? Thanks.

response 38 of 361: Mark Unseen   Apr 4 14:16 UTC 1995

Brian Dunkle graduated from college and moved to Arizona, Tom Dohne is
in Oregon, Denise Anderson is in North Carolina (but she still logs in),
Mike Smerza is around town but doesn't seem to log in much, Marc Unangst
is busy being a college student at Carnegie-Mellon; dunno what happened
to Fred Sleator.

Marc is 1/3 staff, 2/3 real person. He's around a bunch when not
in school; his most recent thing was to get and put together the machine
we now call Gryps. He'll be back, and might even comment on this item
sometime in May...

I know this is going to expose incredible ignorance, but now that I know
what M-net is, what is teleneting and how do you do it?
Thanks,
srw
response 41 of 361: Mark Unseen   Apr 5 01:05 UTC 1995

Telnet is the way someone can use a remote computer via the network.
To use it on Grex, you must be a member, but you are.
So all you should have to do is type
!telnet arbornet.org (or any other computer on the internet)
You should receive their login prompt.
It'll be slow, though, because the net-link is very slow, so
you might want to dial them directly as we're all in the same town.
Telnet comes in handy when you want to connect to a machine
that is far away. A lot of our users telnet *into* Grex, which is a
free service.

Ok & thanks for the info.

Telnet is also useful when all the lines are busy. Then there's the
reason I almost always telnet to Grex: With PPP I can do other things at
the same time.

What is the purpose of a laundry cf?
ajax
response 45 of 361: Mark Unseen   Apr 5 20:29 UTC 1995

Usually, the question "what is the purpose of an X cf" can be answered
with "to discuss X." I believe X=laundry is not an exception. :-)

response 46 of 361: Mark Unseen   Apr 5 21:05 UTC 1995

Right - people want to discuss dirty laundry...
omni
response 47 of 361: Mark Unseen   Apr 6 06:53 UTC 1995

Not only dirty laundry, but clean laundry, mechanisms for transforming
dirty into clean, soaps vs detergents, Laundromats, Home Laundries,
methods of doing laundry, days on which laundry is done, etc.

Have I answered your question, Chris?

response 48 of 361: Mark Unseen   Apr 6 19:50 UTC 1995

I suppose.. (I am not certain I understand the want or need for
such, but to each their own, including cf's)

response 49 of 361: Mark Unseen   Apr 6 21:16 UTC 1995

Ok, as cf-admin trainee I have mailed omni to verify he really wants this
laundry conference, and he has responded to the affirmative. So we have
the request, omni will be fw, with perhaps another named later. If
Master Po is willing, I will create the Laundry Conference.
