Mark, are these things you can let us have for geologic time? I'd like
to see the Sun-3 crawl up upon those crates and not leave 'till its cold
body is carried out past the new net-yet-defined hardware that Grex eventually
becomes. ;-)

They cost ca. $4 ea. at Meijers, in a wide variety of colors. I don't
think they are "true" milk crates, but rather consumer clones.

I've found the clone milk crates you get at Meijer et al. to be a
bit on the brittle side. That is, a misplaced foot against one of
those crates when full of files has cracked pieces off. I'm not sure
if they'd be suitable for the Sun, but maybe. I'll let gregc be
the judge of that :)
Now, the "true" milk crates are incredibly durable, but usually of
dubious origin ;)

I can be available, if needed, as a mover, packer, stringer of wires (have
punch down experience <g> that dates me), or ham radio-equipped go-fer,
if needed. Let me know here, via email, or by phone (enjoy the latest
singing answering machine message). I was a network tech for ADP back
in the 70s & used to build/rebuild network hubs with multiple minis &
dozens of modems & muxes. Can you use a 19" rack cabinet (24"+ high)?

Hmm, interesting. I have about 20 milk crates around here that I bought(as
opposed to the more traditional method of acquiring these things) over 10
years ago. They have proved very durable. They appear to be made out of a
tough, flexible, polyethylene. I believe they are honest-to-god real
milk crates for the industry that were sold through the commercial
channel. Meijer's is probably selling some consumer grade knock-off made
of some kind of thin polystyrene. Just went and checked. They still
have a price sticker on them from Forest City.

I went to look for those metal milk crates and couldn't find them.
Must have thrown them out...sorry.

How much does Grex weigh? I've stood on the commercial, of dubious origin
type of milk crate and had it self-destruct beneath me.

I haven't the foggiest idea what we need/want in terms of radio
communications. Could someone (preferably not someone like STeve who is
already committed to moving hardware for the day) volunteer to coordinate
this? Thanks!

response 32 of 130: Mark Unseen   Jan 10 14:49 UTC 1995

Grex weighs about 80 to 100 pounds
I'm planning to put 2 of them under tthe machine. I've used 1 of the
good type of crate as a step stool and it's held up just fine, and I
weight over 250 pounds. I'll just arrange to buy 2 of the good ones,
if I can't find any, I'll loan 2 of mine 2 grex until I do.

One other note I forgot about: We can't put the sun-3 where it's shown
in the planning diagram exactly. The Box has ventilation slots on both
sides and along the front and cables out the back. It needs at least 1 foot
of clearance on all 4 sides. Minor adjustment, but it's citical, otherwise
the box will overheat.

Re communications: I think STeve needs to say what might be needed, but a
possibility is to have a base station with telephone, which can receive
calls by radio or telephone, and pass them on either way - and a mobile
gofer. I could handle the base function (and stay out of the way ;->). I
wouldn't foresee much traffic, but I'd be doing home office work anyway.
I'd use an otherwise unlisted number, so it would be open most of the time
(we had a problem with phone access in our home, what with the heavy modem
use). STeve, Marc and Tim are radio-active, so key technical people would
have easy communications. N8REG

Yes, someone at a base station with a radio and a phone would be a *big*
help. Thanks. However, at this point, we just have Steve. Marc will be
gone by the 22nd, and I don't know whether Tim is in on this party.

Re 29: You're probably right. I just wanted to warn you about possible
differences in crate construction. You know better what is necessary to
hold up a Sun...

Thanks Rane. Your being at home by a phone could be a big help. I
suppose we could use the autopatch, but I'd prefer having a person on
the air.
(I'm sure I can rope N8KPL into this too, if need be.)

response 37 of 130: Mark Unseen   Jan 10 18:27 UTC 1995

The autopatch slows things down if quick actions are needed. We can
ask ARROW to approve the "Grex Net" on the 22nd. I'll do that tomorrow
night, if its OK with everyone. Re #33 - I'd even provide both our
phone numbers - they provide "conference" calls! One is unlisted,
so I'd like to provide the numbers on a need-to-know basis: e-mail me
the need-to-know list.

   I don't think we'll need a net. I *hope* we wont need a net.
That would imply things are going really badly.

Here's a *non*technical question: What kind of cookies would
the moving crew like for a midafternoon snack? I'm planning
to make some, so I'm willing to take a vote (*oops*, maybe I
should say I'm willing to take *suggestions*!!) Seriously,
I'll take ideas on cookies and drinks!

Re #38: I may have used the wrong word in saying "net". I wanted to
call it something if I'm going to nurse a 2m HT for a good part of
an afternoon. There may be - what - a half-dozen calls, over the period
of the whole move ("up to")? Would it be inappropriate to identify
as "Grex Net" (and callsign, of course), for the little activity that
might take place? Maybe I should just go mobile (to search for LeAnn's
midafternoon snacks - a "cookie 'fox hunt'"?).

I have four of the old fashioned heavy duty milk crates
that I would be willing to donate if someone could come
and pick them up before the 20th as I'll be busy all
that weekend with a seminar.

response 42 of 130: Mark Unseen   Jan 11 02:56 UTC 1995

I'm willing to donate my two as well; one of them is "of dubious origin",
though. :) I stood on them, and they seem sturdy enough (they're the
plastic kind). If Dianne's really are heavy duty, though, they might be
stronger.

Thanks dianne, that sounds good. Where are you? Somewhere in the
Ann Arbor area (ie, closer than say, Flint)?

I won't be around on the 22nd to help out, however, what about building
a stand for Grex? Seems to me you might have some left over lumber from
the containment construction. That way you could adjust for proper height
and you won't have to worry about crates of dubious material or origin.
gregc
response 45 of 130: Mark Unseen   Jan 11 13:32 UTC 1995

The main reason for the crates is in case of moisture. Wood can rot.
Plastic is fairly immune to the effects of water. A stand has to be
built, 2 crates are prebuilt, no labor needed. There is nothing dubious
about the material or origin of what I have in mind.

N8KPL is willing to help, radiowise or otherwise. I can be either in car,
at CE or the dungeon (may have to stuff the kids in the stasis field).
