They mentioned an upcoming HVCN board meeting, and I posted a copy
of agora item 118(?) (the item about the new Michigan Internet Council)
to the HVCN mailing list, a few minutes ago.

Could someone post here the instructions for subscribing to the
mailing lists? I recall seeing them somewhere, but apparently not
in this item. Is it correct that there are two mailing lists, one
general and one on technical issues?

response 27 of 63: Mark Unseen   Feb 15 21:20 UTC 1995

Yes it is true. I haven't received any mail from either for about a week.
To get on the the tech mailing list, send email to lsloan@umcc.umich.edu.
To get on the general mailing list, send mail to k12_barr@emuvax.emich.edu.
I think the general mailing list is really more of a board/staff mailing
list, so Arnodl may be a bit hesitant to add a bunch of subscribers.

Hey, don't ask me, I haven't had anything to do
with them since that one meeting...

Actually, it's all automated now.

From: lsloan@umcc.umich.edu (Lance Sloan)
Subject: Automated list servers
To: hvcn@umich.edu, hvcn-tech@umich.edu
Date: Fri, 27 Jan 1995 15:56:20 -0500 (EST)

Well, it works. It's not pretty, but that's what you get when you write
a listserver by hand from just a couple hours of work. :)

People can now send mail to:

        hvcn-request@umich.edu

With ONE of the following commands in the body of the message:

        subscribe hvcn
        unsubscribe hvcn
        subscribe hvcn-tech
        unsubscribe hvcn-tech

That's right, only ONE command per message. Sorry...

Send an invalid command and you will get help. Subscribe and you will get
help. Unsubscribe and you will get a confirmation.

If you have any problems, you can always send mail to me or:

        hvcn-owner@umich.edu

response 32 of 63: Mark Unseen   Feb 17 08:48 UTC 1995

Arnold Barr, HVCN chair, asked me whether Grex might be interested in
joining HVCN in an application for some NII funds -- are we interested?
He said "We want to get several community groups involved."

I will be meeting with hvcn-tech Friday afternoon, and Arnold will be there.
I'll try to get some more details about what he has in mind.

response 34 of 63: Mark Unseen   Feb 20 06:27 UTC 1995

The meeting Friday did not offer the opportunity to get any more details,
primarily because it dragged on past 6pm, and I had to leave before it was
over.

I did learn that the applications for NII funds should be made fairly soon,
as a May date was mentioned for the decision on these applications.
So I hoped we could get a little discussion going on the merits of
trying this. I am relatively clueless, though.

I'm all for attending a meeting or two, in order to find out more
about it. I doubt that we can get anything, but its probably worth
the look-see to check it out.

response 39 of 63: Mark Unseen   Feb 24 03:26 UTC 1995

No thoughts on this? I'll tell Arnold [Barr of HVCN] that everyone on
Grex is in a trance, and no one has any opinion on whether we should join
the HVCN in a grant application. (prod, prod)

My opinion is that we could really make use of the funds, but don't want
strings attached, because we're so darned fiercely independent-minded.
We'd rather be poor than give up any control. The above is not criticism
by me on how Grex is run, by the way. I feel this way too.

Actually I don't think that's an obstacle. I think the only obstacle is
that no one has much of a clue how to apply for stuff like this. I sure don't.

response 40 of 63: Mark Unseen   Feb 24 04:14 UTC 1995

It sure sounds worth further effort to me! And I think your perception of
fierce independence is a generally held one, so mentioning that to Arnold
outright (that "strings" would be a problem) sounds like a good idea. It
could help avoid a falling out later on in the process.

response 41 of 63: Mark Unseen   Feb 24 13:17 UTC 1995

Click! I just figured out that srw is talking about the same grants
that Arnold Barr was talking about elsewhere. I definitely think these
are worth applying for. We need to find a few Grexers to go meet with
HVCN folks and other people to start working on an application.
steve
response 42 of 63: Mark Unseen   Feb 24 14:12 UTC 1995

If we can do this, fine. But I agree with what Steve said in #39,
and will only add that we're doing pretty well the way we've done things
so far. But, if its possible to get some grant money and it isn't odious,
I'm for it. How to we start?
sidhe
response 43 of 63: Mark Unseen   Feb 24 15:58 UTC 1995

Just be cautious, and up-front about the no-strings deal. We don't
want to get taken in accidentally, under false pretenses, so be very
vigilant in regards to ANYTHING that might be used against the independance
of this system. If you are willing to play it very safe, I have no objections
to the concept.

response 45 of 63: Mark Unseen   Feb 25 08:29 UTC 1995

I think our chances of actually obtaining any grant money are substantially
enhanced by co-applying with HVCN. If we get any money at all from this,
it will largely dwarf what we have raised ourselves, I suspect.
steve
response 46 of 63: Mark Unseen   Feb 26 07:10 UTC 1995

I don't think so--if we got something, it will be because of what
we are doing, not because of who we're with during the initial application.
Of course, the fact that we don't have 501c3 means that most likely we
won't get it.

Arnold Barr sent mail about a meeting, this Friday, to talk
about putting together a joint TIAAP grant application between
the HVCN, Grex, and I'm not sure what other organizations.
I sent mail back saying that Grex is interested, but concerned
about what kinds of strings might be attached to a TIAAP grant.
Here is Arnold's reply. I'd like to invite anybody from Grex
who is interested in this meeting on Friday to please come.
