Just got the July issue. Edward Elgar's wonderful Cello Concerto,
and the 9th Symphony of the British composer George Lloyd. The
latter is a "light" piece that seems undistinguished on first
hearing. In the magazine, "English Music: Green and pleasant, but
does it sell?" is the lead article, and Vaughan Williams is the
composer of the month.

I'm ticked off. I haven't received an issue since April. Guess I
better check my Visa bill to see if they've been charging me.

It's been almost a year since this magazine/CD service began. Do
the folks who subscribed still find it worthwhile? Is delivery
still iffy?

I still like it. Delivery isn't iffy, I don't think.

They stopped sending them to me (and charging me for them), and I
didn't bother to resubscribe.

The latest package came yesterday. The CD is Edith Vogel
performing Beethoven's piano sonatas Opus 106 and Opus 111.
She's wonderful. The article about her in the magazine shows
that she died a couple of years ago at the age of 80-something.
She was born in Vienna, but lived in England where she taught
and performed. She only made a couple or recordings, and this
is one of them. It's my first Opus 111 on CD. The Opus 111 is
to me what I guess Mahler's 9th symphony is to chelsea.

The current issue has a CD of 88 year old Michael Tippett
conducting his 2nd and 4th symphonies. (He's 90 this year.)
The opening of the 2nd symphony always floors me - pounding
rhythms, horn calls, headlong polytonal momentum. It's
rhythmically compelling in a way that makes you think of
the opening of Brahms' 1st symphony.
