I have reported a summary of the consensus here to the Conference
Proposal item in Coop cf.

I'm a little uncertain about a "classic" abbreviation for the name;
lots of things can be classic, like 70's rock...

The new conferences are set up and waiting for Leslie and I to make them all
comfy. I'm hoping we'll get them in service by the end of the weekend.
I just need a little time to gather my thoughts.

OK, now I need some help with the flyers.
All I have is something like this:

-----

Ann Arbor's
Online Music Discussion

rock / folk / jazz / world / classical

(Some hype about how our music conferences will make you
more intelligent and stop your hair from falling out)

Grex (perhaps Rob's new logo?)

To join: http://www.cyberspace.org
           telnet grex.cyberspace.org
           761-3000 (modem settings)
           (high speed number) (modem settings)

and then:

  bbs music
  bbs classicalmusic

-----

Please help punch this up, and also help refine the contact info.

Because I want to market the conference to people who are not veteran
Picospan users, I want a 5-10 line guide to key commands, most notably
BROWSE, FORGET and JOIN.
Any ideas on anything else that should be included here?
Does such a canned text exist in another conference somewhere?

I would like to apologize to raven and kewy for getting unnecessarily
snippy about the first item in newmusic.

I would also like to ask if we should "follow the market" and set up
separate items for Celtic and Folk music, or if I should cling to my
1970s perspective which lumps them together.

Looks good. I'm going to be visiting relatives out of state during
Thanksgiving week, so I have to ask Leslie to get classicalmusic
off to a healthy start.

Interesting. Use of the term "classical" immediately stimulates argument.
For example, the more modernistic composers of the last hundred
years seem to have an anti-classical and/or anti-romantic
direction in the sense that they are trying to things differently than
they were done before, like they are trying to break out of the older
molds. I am thinking of Stravinsky, Prokofiev, Shostakovich, Hindemith,
etc. How ironic to file them under "classical"

But it's hard to think of a better term. Symphonic, perhaps?

How about John Corigliano, hope I spelled him correctly.
His Symphony #1 is dedicated to the fight against the AIDS virus.
And it is stunningly dramatic, modernistic but accessible,
really amazing. Classical? hmm . .

No matter what categories you use, it's the most interesting music
that falls through the cracks. Take ragtime, as noted, does it go
in classical? Well maybe.

How about orchestra.cf and band.cf?
Hey I thought about it for a whole minute.

So, where would you put solo piano music? Or singers
accompanied by a pianist? Or any chamber music, for that matter?
I think we should stick with classicalmusic for the time being.
I'm going to get it started later today, by the way.

I think the word "classical" has a couple of different meanings in
this context. If you limit it to "as opposed to romantic" then you
run into problems with music since 1800 or so. When we say "classical"
music, I think we're using it in its commonly accepted meaning of
"art" music or "serious" music. I think you have to include a lot of
movie scores in this category, too. John Williams' scores are what
used to be called "light classical." Anyway, most of us know "classical"
when we hear it. (Please don't get hung up on the words "art" and
"serious," both of which I realize could equally apply to some popular
music and most jazz.)

Heh... I was just about to say, quit arguing about what "classical music" is
- we all know it when we hear it. However, the conference isn't going to
filter music according to a set of rules: whatever anyone considers
"classical" will eventually be discussed.

I have asked Valerie to swap in the newmusic conference for public
use.
