Alternative? Underground? Non-commercial (which is never true)
Mainstream? Middle of the Road?

Regarding #23, the Shamen are a techno-rock band. (You might be
familiar with their song, "Move Any Mountain" ?) The _Sliver_
Soundtrack also happens to be techno oriented. (It has Enigma's
"Carly's Song", which is to DIE for.)

By the way, I sort of apologize for entering response #20. I thought
that I was entering a response to an item called "music I like", which
was actually just the previous response. I do, however, personally
like the thread that took off from it....

Is anyone into ambient music? A lot of my friends are into groups like
Biosphere, Future Sound of London, the Aphex Twin, Orbital. I admit that most
of it only serves to make me very sleepy, but some of it (like the Prodigy) is
played at raves here in Saskatoon. Responses please!

What is ambient music?

I've seen a concert of Biosphere, that guy's on stage doing
nothing more than entering floppy discs. Utterly booooooring.
Read like it is stated, I didn't say anything 'bout the music.
By the way, alayne, if you would like to venture a link
between ambient and new ave,
try to listen to stuff like Love is colder than death, or
cd's from the series FRom accross this Greyland (various
artists). There a thin line between new wave and
ambient house music, it seems.

I've noticed that a lot of people really like Frank Zappa here.
Will I be shot if I say that I've never heard anything by him?
Or maybe I have...What are some of his "radio" songs.

My guess is you may have heard one of the following on "rock" radio:

"Valley Girl" (like oh, m'gawd!)
"Montana" ("I might be moving to Montana soon...")
"Don't eat the Yellow Snow" ("Watch out where the Huskies go...")

Apart from that, if you've never listened to Dr. Demento, you've probably
never heard anything else on "commercial" radio.

And *maybe* a couple of other tracks from the album "Montana" is on --
"Dirty Love" and "Dyna-Mo Hum" (which I know I'm not spelling right.)

There was a video for "You Are What You Is" that was on MTV briefly when
the album of the same name came out in 1982 or so.

Is Dr. Demento still doing shows? I thought I heard he died. Dunno. I still
like WIDR's Dementia Royale show in K-zoo. Too bad I'm in Saginaw. :(

(For those interested, Dr. Demento is *still* on the air in AA on WIQB
at 11:00 Sunday nights (that's 102.9 fm)

re #32: MTV didn't play "You Are What You Is" because they didn't
like the idea of a look alike Ron Regan being fried in the electric chair.

Wussies...

I like to call my music "Progressive." From that you can add segments such
as Progessive Rock, Progressive Folk, etc. In DC we used to just have 1
radio station that played this type of music. Now a used to be classic rock
station jumped on the bandwagon with all the Progressive bands being popular.
So know we have 2.

In the late '70's, Progressive Rock was used to describe Yes and
Genesis. :-)

Dr. Demento is scheduled to make a personal appearance in Lansing
at Conclave, a science fiction convention, at the end of the month.
