Selena, this is the "what grex gets right", not "what selena gets right" item.

I like that responses are rarely censored by Grex's staff, at least in
the areas I read.

I like the fact that we now have a login queue so I know about how long I have
to wait to get on...and I love seeing familiar "faces" every day! =)

Mary> ITems are censored, rightly so, if they contain information of a
clearly destructive nature, i.e., "Sex orgy at Popcorn's house! Everyone come
on down Saturday afternoon, here's her address: ------" (that should be an
e.g, not an i.e., and this example is based on something that happeened on
MNet, but not to Popcorn).
*brighn swacks scott* Grex volunteer staff are good at reminding us that they
are volunteers by saying rude vindictive things that would get an employee
fired for saying to a client.

*scott swacks brigh back* Grex volunteer staff are not capable of ignoring
sustained abuse from the users, without occasionally hitting back. Sorry,
brighn, but I'm getting sick of some of the complainers who bitch about how
screwed up Grex's board, staff, and policies are, but who *still* like it
enough to use it without contributing.
I do believe that Grex should offer a free access, for those who have trouble
affording access. I also believe that people who use Grex and *can* afford
to be a member ought to be a contributor. I'm sick of people who use Grex
a lot, but who don't want to contribute "because of Grex's policies", or
whatever. Doesn't matter if you *agree* with how things are done, just
whether you find Grex useful.

Mary, I was thinking of an incident a year ago, when mju censored an
Agora response because he thought it violated the law. That's the only
time I can recall staff "censorship." It's also nice that Grexers don't
enter things like Paul mentioned to test the limits. :-)

Re: #33 Ah, I thought so. I don't consider staff removing text
that is clearly in violation of the law a form of censorship.
Oh, I guess it is technically, but it's not a form of censorship
I'd be concerned about. Grex has an obligation to stay within
the law.
I too am very pleased that the Grex staff/Board doesn't try to solve
people problems or avoid controversial topics/discussion by censoring
text.

re 32:
In order to preserve my sanity, both here and at work, I've had to just
come to the conclusion that system administration is a very thankless job.
In the eyes of lots of users, anything that doesn't work is the system
administrator's fault, while anythign that does work is evidence that the
system administrator isn't needed.

One that anyone could have come to, Steve.
So why do we have sys admin anyway? =}

Re 35, in the case in question, most people felt the text didn't
violate the law, but mju did, and that was that. Ironically, I've
seen posts that do violate laws (copyright laws) go unquestioned.

True Rob... case in pint, Sexuality II's "Whistle While You Work", where
people tell what they're listening to, and plenty of posts (including my own)
quote song lyrics. Then again, there are entire items in Music or whatever
dedicated to posting your favorite song lyrics, and it's even more prevalent
on other BBSs.
(point, not pint =} )
(lest y'
all think i'm a hypocrite between here and the Web browser item, i quote
lyrics with proper attribution, never without, and the latter is my concern..
I don't care if 5 million copies of my poems appear worldwide, as long as they
all have my name on them =} )
I believe the issue is
(a) deleting posts that someone may actually sue over -- I hardly think Tom
Petty is going to bother suing a small AA BBS because someone said "You got
lucky babe, when I found you" in a post.
(b) deleting posts that may actually cause harm -- "scg is a big jerk and
anyone who thinks pigeons should be allowed to eat broccilli should join me
in the fight for cityfowl rights with a baseball bat outside his home, at
*give address* on *give date and time*. Wear your favorite tutu, so he knows
we're in this as a group, as he gasps his dying breaths."
Beyond that, I don't think Grex can or should patrol -- there are too many
small laws to be broken.

I like just about everything that Grex does. I *love* the telnet que, and
think that's it's a wonderful addition. I like picospan a lot, and think that
it's just about the best confing system that I've ever tried. But the best
cf system in the world does no good without people to contribute. That's what
I like most about grex: the people on the system.
