I agree. I'd even donate $15 toward the more expensive membership that
doesn't require that we bring in new memberships...

I agree that the EFF is lobbying against legislation here, but my point is
that that alone doesn't prevent them from being a 501(c)(3). Our membership
in the EFF wouldn't either. Rane explained it.

Yeah. But you have to know what you are doing here. This is hardball as far
as the IRS is concerned.

One of the things that offends me about the EFF is that they have been
consistently late or absent in the defense of freedom on the internet.
Their usual excuse is either "We weren't asked for help," or "That's
not our concern." When they do involve themselves, it typically seems
to be a fund-raising gambit, rather than a serious effort to advance
"freedoms." They had ample notice of the Telecommunications Act, and
as a lobbying group they certainly were in place to lobby against that
Act. Yet they did nothing until it was passed, and now they want to
coast along on the ACLU's coattails. Give your money to the ACLU.

Agree on funding ACLU.

For Basic membership, send $20 to: ACLU of Michigan, 1249 Washington
Blvd., Ste. 2910, Detroit, MI 48226. Support the most effective
organization in the country for the defense of individual constitutional
liberties!

I'm a former ACLU member who let his membership lapse (shame on me,
though I did get a bit irritated at all the mail reminders they
kept sending me) but definitely intend to renew now. But in addition
to a basic membership in the Michigan chapter, I'd like to make a
more substantial contribution to the national organization. What
would the address for that be?

I wasn't aware of the EFF's pre-passage inactivity on the CDA, but
they're certainly vocal about it now, so I plan to contribute to
them too.

None of the liberties groups are perfect. They've all fallen down
upon occaisons, and have had bad periods of time in their histories.
That doesn't suggest to me that the EFF isn't worth supporting--just
that they might need an extra kick now and then. But, haven't they
all?

The EFF is a relatively young organization, and they're definitely
feeling out what their goals should be. I think they're undergoing
some internal strife as to whether they should continue with their
more original mission of providing legal assistance and defense, or
move into political lobbying on issues such as the CDA.

#33 is worth re-reading.

Is there a way you can convince them to send just one mailing a year?
ajax
response 37 of 43: Mark Unseen   Feb 21 21:59 UTC 1996

You can convince them to send 0 mailings a year by sending the
donation anonymously, asking them to not to record the name off
the check. Of course, some of the mailings are interesting, but
they can be overshadowed by the quantity of funding requests.

re #33: EFF was not organized as a civil liberties group.

A very cogent response, Arnold. One of your best. Consult #33, and all
will make sense.

I think M-net/Grex were part of the formation of the Electronic
Frontier, pioneers in the truest sense of the word. Seems like
it would be a good fit for Grex.
