Actually, I just tried it with Netscape (3.0) Cute FTP (1.4) and
WS FTP (3.0 for Win 95), and the message appeared in all (although
WS FTP only showed it two lines at a time at the bottom of the
screen). All in all, I'd wager that a majority of users who FTP
to Grex see that message.

Wow, I stand corrected then. I thought I'd used three GUI FTP apps that
didn't show the message, but one of them was Netscape, which you mention,
so I must be mistaken.

WS FTP (Win95) and Anarchie (Mac) and Fetch (Mac) display the messages
in a seperate log window which may or may not open automatically,
depending on your settings.
I believe Netscape prints the messages with the first directory it
displays, but not subsequent directories.
