Oh, when you get a string of garbage, you should try sending a line break
(it depends on your software how you do that) which will cause the modem to
change speeds. You might have toepeat several times.

If you try to connect from a 14.4 or 28.8 modem, you should put a modem
command in you inti string which disables MNP if you'r going to call 761-3000.
These problems will disappear when we dump the Supra 2400s.

Yep, that string of characters is a classic sign of using a newer
modem to connect to Grex's older 2400 baud modems, without disabling
the newer modem's error-correcting protocols.

It's the main reason I hope the fund drive to replace all the older
modems succeeds. I suspect that the majority of new local users just
get the string of garbage chars, and give up after a couple tries.
There's no way to verify this though, because the people who give up
are an unrepresented group on Grex! But I'm pretty sure most people
have error-correcting modems these days, and I'm quite sure most of
them don't know how/when to disable error correction.

I presume (hope) that 28.8 modems here won't sneer at 2.4 users - I
mostly use 2.4 on asynch dialins, unless I want to do file transfer.
(The MichNet NAS 28.8 modems accomodate 2.4 with nary a sneer.)

Yeah, they "dumb down". No problem.
