A month ago it was router problems. Our NetBSD router kept crashing.
We are running FreeBSD now, and it rarely crashes, although there has
been the occasional hang - it's very rare.

Mostly we have had the link drop and it can usually be re-eastablished
within a minute or two. You saw that happen, jep.

When it cannot be re-eastabled, we have determinied that it is because we
are sometimes getting connected to a different portmaster at IC-Net,
and its routing tables are not right. This can be fixed easily, and
some staff memeber is trying to get in touch with ICnet to make this happen.

Even better would be to get our dedicated line back.

Tell me about it... I tried FTPing this morning - this morning,
when the load averages were less than 2 - and I managed to get
the files it at a whopping 6 baud. Yes, six bytes ber second.
I can TYPE faster than that. And http connections are just
as bad.

Any word on why we can't have our own line?

I think it's just that we haven't yet contacted Ivars.
I agree with jep that the modems shouldn't be dropping carrier
as often as they are. Something isn't right yet.

Indeed, it still happens to me, as well.

It just happened again. I'm now dialed in on a modem.
I'm glad it's not router problems, anyway.

Although I haven't heard from staff on this, I'd assume last night's
Internet outage wasn't just a run of the mill case of being off the Net.
Attempting to ping Grex from my Linux box, with a PPP connection to
MichNet, as well as from a Unix box at work, resulted in a message that
was something like "no route to host." Pinging nether.net and
abraham.ccaa.edu (the two other machines I could think of that get their
connections from ICNet, produced the same result.

I know nothing more, beyond that it was not a problem with Grex's end.

Well, my problem occurs when gre x is up.

Re 30: Grex itself was down for a few hours last night, though that's
probably not what you're talking about.
