Re earlier responses about adding a question to newuser - from
talking to new users who "write help", one of the things that
appeals to users, and in particular to the users who stay here,
is that we're non-commercial. We don't have ads popping up
on the screen a la Prodigy, we don't demand money or we'll
throw you off, etc. If we do put in a question about being
on a commercial mailing list, I think remmers and brighn
are right, we'd scare off a lot of users who would otherwise
love this system.
Sorry, rcurl, but that sounds like something AOL would do. >8)

I agree that this is not the kind of message a lot of people would
like to see when they first see us. It would make some feel uncomfortable,
others would get *completely* the wrong idea--that we are some
commercial group, which we are proudly and sometimes-strapped-for-
cashedly most definitely not!

First? no, but "later," not a problem.

I couldn't find an item for this, and I didn't want to create a whole
item, so I'm posting here. My apologies if I offend anyone.
Has anyone thought of the members from faraway places who can't now get
into Grex? How long exactly has the link been down? Some people may
ask for their money back. Has anyone thought of this? Is Grex able to
rebate people for inability to use?

Re #26, 28 etc. Gotta admit I don't understand the objection: it would
be entirely, 100%, optional, and some people would want to get more
junk mail, and those that don't, needn't. However I will acknowledge that
there may be lots of others things in such optional categories, so I
will suggest that we have a *place* where people can sign up for freebies,
as they wish. Maybe a lynx page, so you just need to select the hypertext,
and you get put on the list (and a way to get off by selecting a remove-me).

re #30: what money?
if you're referring to memberships, danr will more than likely
extend the membership for the number of affected days. I won't
speak for him, though.

If Grex doesn't come up tonight, then it almost certainly will
by Wednesday. I think we can make allowances for extending members
membership periods.

100 members times $3 for half a month's membership is $300.

I might be wrong, but I think Dan does all memberships in half-month
segments, starting either at the beginning or half-way through the month.

I think it is a donation, but I can see where a goodwill extension might
be in order. How about E-mail to membership offering the extension? I
would not request one. Others may. This could be accounted as "lost
income" when we sue the turd. (oops that just popped out, I meant to stay
civil)

I do not wish for any extension. I say, "for better or for worse, or
until we divorce". During the down time, I implicitly received an
enormous amount of donated time and effort from staff members, who
brought the system back up. I'm in favor of praising them highly,
instead of grumbling about our (selfish) lost time. What about their's?
That's my opinion.

Well, Carson, some people couldn't dial in, and those are the ones that
I think Pattie was trying to speak for. I think I agree with #39, but
I wouldn't object to extending a membership if the downtime got to be
greater than half a month and the member was upset about it.

I soften my stand a bit, when confronted with members that would have
liked to have exercised their membership privileges of voting, and
discussing Grex issues in coop, etc. That is, those membership privileges
provided in the bylaws (and therby sanctioned by state law). However,
only if there is *no way* for the member to exercise those rights. I
don't think any of those conditions applied in this case.
