You interpret incorrectly. The purpose of language is to communicate
effectively, and to identify group membership. Any communicative signals which
do both of those things are correct.

Jamie's been brooding over losing the Grex election. Every once in a
while his resentment spills over, is all. He ran as a joke on Grex and
then got all offended that nobody voted for him. It's that sort of
thing that makes him so much fun to have around.

I'd've voted for him, but (a) I'm not a member and (b) I still have my frontal
lobes.

I'd rather have this bottle in front of me than.. a frontal lobotomy!

#33> Because, wile an effectively communicated message may include the
message, "I belong to group X" or "I don't belong to group X," this particular
message seems particularly salient in the way people use language, and tends
to be brought up most often as a non-communicative event by people who don't
realize it's a communicative event. It needn't be singled out.

If you're going to let that one go, you don't really see my point. The "people
like you" was a joke, in this context...

(We were talking about group identity. "People like you" characterizes you
a s a member of a group, not as an individual. I dunno. It was late, I was
tired, sometime I feel compelled to make a joke no matter how lame it is. Pat
me on the head, give me a cookie, hide the knives, I'll be fine.)
