don't you mean "jwaysie"?

the teachers make more money there, but yet just recently they went on strike
and one of their main arguments (besides health care) was that their higher
salaries didn't mean jackshit when compared to the high cost of living there.

chemical dumping has coincidently coincided with an unusually hight number
of autistic kids born there.

people drive like insane people. yes, even more so than in NYC - although i
believe most of the crazy drivers in NYC are, in fact, 'bridge and tunnel
people'.

now, i have met some nice people from jersey. (okay, only one) and i also am
a bit of a Devil's fan too.

Everybody hates Joisey. But *somebody's* gotta live there.

A few more reasons why NJ sucks:

Those refugees "sheltered" at Ft Dix, NJ a few years back,
were begging to be sent back to war torn Kosovo.

There's not a Hungry Howies, Cottege inn, Little Caesars
or a Hardee's resturant in the state.

You can't put a silly vanity plate on the front bumper of
your vehicle, because you are required to have front and
rear License plates.

You have to pay a $3 toll to just get out of the state.

That toll is to get INTO New York City. There is no toll to get into PA.

Every bridge I've been on to get to PA or DE (The Betsy ross,
Tacony Palmyra, Ben Franklin, Delaware Memorial, Burlington-Bristol
and Trenton toll bridge) all had tolls.

There are a few other bridges in the area, but i'm pretty sure they
also have tolls.

The Devils have about 3 real fans, and can't even sell their playoff games.
They're an embarassment to the league.

Hmm... eprom's description of why New Jersey sucks could have been describing
the Bay Area, with the possible exception of the refugees wanting to leave.
I'd generally thought of those things as at worst neutral factors.

I don't think I'd want to live in the Bay Area, but for different reasons.

Re #29: the assertion was it cost "a $3 toll to just get out of the state".
The fact is, that is not true everywhere you can leave the state. Most
big bridges have tolls in both directions - some New York City
bridges being exceptions. However there are hundreds of roads crossing
the New Jersey border with no tolls in either direction. So, scatch that
claim.

The weird thing is that when you drive out of New Jersey into Pennsylvania,
the sign says: "Welcome to Pennsylvania - AMERICA STARTS HERE".

You know, if New Jersey did not exist, it would be a long boat ride,
or big detour, to go west from New York City?

i consider staten island a part of NJ, not NY. what a disgrace.

rcurl
response 37 of 49: Mark Unseen   May 10 05:59 UTC 2002

Why? Proximity? New Jersey abuts New York, so is it part of New York?

I have lived in Tottenville, Staten Island, NY, and even went to school
there briefly.

Do you know how Staten Island got its name? When the Dutch sailed
for the first time into New York Harbor, they looked west and said
to one another "Iz dat en Island?".

i lived in snug harbor, SI and spent some time in NJ. i'd say staten island
belongs more with the NJites than the new yawkahs.

it iz un island but iz also a garbage dump.

I thought that NJ was the garden state because of all the stiffs the mob
planted there... ;-)

Actually, I like *western* NJ - very scenic toward the Delaware.

#37 sounds apocryphal. reminds me of how the germans exclaimed
"vas ist das???" upon seeing transoms for the first time, and the
name stuck.

It's the "Garden State" because of its very large agricultural activity,
being in the top 10 nationally for production of "cranberries,
blueberries, peaches, asparagus, bell peppers, spinach, lettuce,
cucumbers, sweet corn, tomatoes, snap beans, cabbage, escarole/endive and
eggplant".

See
http://www.state.nj.us/agriculture/index.html#Overview of Agriculture in
the Garden State
for more such information.
