The only Canadian city I've visited is Stratford (though we did stop for a meal
somewhere en route, and so I learned (by overhearing some friends) that you
can't get ice in a soft drink in Canada), on a field trip with my AP English
Lit & Comp class to see _As You Like It_ (now one of my favorite plays).
On the other hand, CBC Radio 2 is the primary radio station at home. The only
time we always listen to something else is from 6-7 o'clock weeknights (there's
"Marketplace" on WGTE and then on WUOM) and from 10-12 Saturday ("Car Talk" and
then "Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me" on WEMU).

Yeah, that's right.
You can't get ice in your drink up here.
It's 'cause we need it for our igloos.

Hmm... When I was in Toronto (like 4 years ago now) I was able to get
ice in my soft drink...

I'm a terrible person that way. But honestly, my needs are just that
much more important. ;)

re #30, 31: I've never had a knife drawn on me in either place,
from which I conclude both are perfectly safe, though I have been
abducted at gunpoint from a parking lot in Ann Arbor, so remember
to be extra careful there.. :-p
Actually, my sister Sheila has the best "Welcome to Detroit" story
of anyone I know personally. When Sheila graduated from Michigan
State she was accepted to the law school at Detroit College of Law
(which was at that time actually located in Detroit; somewhat
confusingly it's now in East Lansing..) Thus in September of 1980
or so she moved to Detroit, where she moved in with my sister Mariann
(who was also going to law school, at Wayne State.) Mariann's then
boyfriend (now husband of 20+ years) Bill had grown up in Detroit
and is a big booster of the area so he really wanted Sheila to form
a positive impression of his hometown. Bill is also a fanatic Tigers
fan and thus he hit upon the idea of taking my two sisters to a
late-season baseball game at Tiger Stadium on a sunny September
afternoon. All three of them were students at the time and none
had a lot of money to spare, so they bought the cheapest bleacher
seats they could get, which is where they made their biggest mistake..
As Sheila tells the story, a bunch of the other inhabitants of the
bleacher section that day were intoxicated and an argument broke
out in the stands just behind where they were sitting. Apparently
it escalated pretty rapidly because before they were quite sure
what was happening, a gentleman two or three rows behind them had
stabbed the man formerly sitting (now standing) behind Sheila and
the force of the thrust caused the man to fall backwards and land
sprawled across Sheila's lap. Welcome to Detroit!
