Would clogged nozzles produce such a regular pattern?  One clear stripe prints
properly, the next prints light (or now not at all).  SOmeone said 'memory
problem' and Jim wonders if it is contacts going bad.  We will try replacing
the printer as Kiwanis throws out the older ones all the time.

I'll take a guess that the printhead goes right, then the paper scrolls 1/12
inch, then the printhead goes left, then the paper scrolls 1/12 inch, etc.
Which would mean that your printing looks different depending on whether the
printhead is moving left or right.
