No, I don't think we're trying to come up with "rules" about
login screens, Arnold. We're trying to have a discussion about
them, which I can't say I've had with TS.
There are a few people who don't mind the login screen. There are
many more who don't like it, and an undetermined number of people
who haven't spoken up on the subject at all.
It seems to me then, that making frequent users of the conference
not have to see it would be a good thing. But we haven't gotten much
in the way of an actual conversation on this.

It's dead, STeve.
Now, make yourself useful and peel me another grape. ;-)

suggestion...why not have all interested parties submit what they think
would be a proper login screen, in a separate item...then have the
users vote on which one they like best. TSTY and Nephi could submit the
current screen as their entry. This way those users for whom the login
screen is important can have more input than they have presently. For
instance, since STeve has been at the forefront of this debate, I'd be
interested in seeing what his ideal of a coop login can be, and anyone
else's for that matter.

(<grin> Finding a login screen that everyone liked was what this item was
*supposed* to be for, Richard, but as you see, not a single person has (yet)
submitted a login screen for discussion. Personally, I would love to see a
login screen with a couple or a few lines of warm, welcoming text, encouraging
new people to participate, and perhaps pointing them to a bulletin file, but
not annoying the majority of the existing users. Well, that's what I would
like to see, anyway, and what I was planning to argue for, had someone
presented an idea . . . anyway, I *really* like your consructive angle,
Richard. Thanks.)

Oh that's right, that was the purpose of the item. Kinda got lost in
the shuffle, didn't it? Okay, here's my suggestion:
THE CO-OP CONFERENCE | The place to talk about how Grex
- | is run. Everyone welcome!
Eighth Edition |
- | (Type "help intro" for more
Fair Witnesses: tsty & nephi | details.)

Looks good to me. A line or two less white space before & after would be OK,
but this would be *much* less likely to trip my pager just as it is.

Now one darn minute, nephi! A single person *has* submitted a login
screen for discussion - in response #38.
# 205 is OK, though a bit overblown and wordy. ;)

I also submitted one in response to your request in item 17, "separate
item for discussing the content of /bbs/coop8/login" (I read that before
I read this item, as they overlap a bit). It was even installed for a
day or so! But I prefer remmers' suggestion. For further editing, how
about leaving out the edition? It never seemed that important to me.
Or maybe change it to "THE 8TH CO-OP CONFERENCE":
THE CO-OP CONFERENCE The place to talk about how Grex is run.
- Everyone welcome!
Fair Witnesses: tsty & nephi (Type "help intro" for more details.)

I'll take either John's in #205 or Rob's in #211. Both are quite
nice compared to what we have now.

Re #209: The white space before and after was just to set it off.
If it were the actual login screen, I'd have only one empty line
before and after the text.

The author of #204 appears to have forgotten #145. Any of the login
messages (in 145,205,211) would be a vast improvement over the current
one.
Even 216 would be an improvement. It's shorter. :-)

Re #'s 204, 205, 211, etc: Okay, as per nephi's request, a couple
of new candidates for a login screen have been proposed and
received some support. I think a timetable needs to be set for
submission of any new proposals and resolution of this issue.
I'll suggest two weeks from today's date -- Sunday, May 12.

As I try to avoid coop lately, I just now read through this whole thing,
in accordians. This is sick stuff. The only reason my Sexuality II login
screen is that long is because not only has no one objected, but I've
recieved sveral compliments on it's asthetic beauty. (I thoght it was just
pretty ascii myself *shrug*) Tsty and nephi have recieved many many
requests that it be changed, and now, several good suggestions on the
conciseness that would be appreciated. The ball is now, once again, in
their court.. where we've had to go asnd pick it up from several times
now. Hopefully they'll be nice enough to at least reply. This seems to
reflect a similar "I know what's best for you" attitude that was present
in the party setting brouhaha in January, and nephi was involved, there, too.
