Re 198: We could simply have a Really Big Honking Birthday Party for
Grex this year. Would that work? It's not too many months in the future
at this point....

For those of us who are clueless... when is Grex's birthday?

response 202 of 259: Mark Unseen   Feb 25 20:59 UTC 1995

popcorn says July 18, and that the date is somewhat negotiable.

Let's just nominate July as Grex's birth month. Then we can celebrate all
month! Just think... four weekends for grex conventions!

No, the birthday isn't negotiable--it's July 18th, at about 4:33PM.
What *is* negotiable is *when* we celibrate it! ;-)

My actual statement that response #202 is based on went something like,
"There are a lot of dates that could be called Grex's birthday. You could
count the first founders' meeting, or the day Grex first went on-line for
only founders to work on, or the day Grex opened its doors to the public
for the first time. Generally we celebrate the day Grex opened to the
public, which is July 18th."

Or the day grex linked to the net.. I get the idea.
So, what of my suggestions on Southfield?

response 207 of 259: Mark Unseen   Feb 26 18:37 UTC 1995

No. Grex's birthday was when we did what we said we'd do: become
real. The time of the founders meetings was rather something like
conception, except that it involved 12 people and took months. ;-)

Thank heavens Grex wasn't born out of anybody's body! It has lots of
sharp corners and wires. Yowch!!!

And disks. God, don't forget the disks. Oww.

How big a baby was Grex?

   About 230 pounds.

        Southfield, anyone?

(Re 214: And I complain when other people enter zilions of responses
that just say "yeah!". ooops. <sigh> You're right, and I'll try to be
better in the future.)

Sidhe - I'd guess people are kinda luke-warm about Southfield, since nobody
has responded enthusiastically Yes or No.

Southfield can work - What about Ft. Wayne, IN?

If you think the birth was weird, think of this: as Grex gets older,
it will become more powerful as any teenager would. But, besides getting
stronger, it will get smaller. Eventually it will be 100 times more
powerful than it was at birth, yet weigh 1/10 as much.

response 219 of 259: Mark Unseen   Mar 1 07:42 UTC 1995

So, by that reasoning, Grex will eventually become a small cube of super
dense matter that will sink to the center of the earth and begin to suck
the Earth's mass into it's gravity well until nothing remains but a small
sphere of nutronium orbiting the sun. Phew! We better be careful about
our future upgrade policy.

Ft. Wayne is fine, too.. but I was attempting to realign the item
with it's origina; purpose.. discussing where when and how a GrexCon should
happen!

I just read through this item. Whew!

I'm definitely in favor of a Grex get together, and would attend
it if it were within 400 miles of AA.

Having said this, I have nothing to offer concerning location,
time or organization. The one thing that seemed obvious is that
to get large numbers, it should be in the Ann Arbor area. The
other thing that seemed obvious is that nobody is obviously
taking the lead to coordinate it.

Two thoughts come to mind. Why not see if there's enough
interest to have a convention type get together in Ann Arbor
where there is the best chance of getting critical mass. Let's
also see if there would be enough interest to have a weekend
gathering (not necessarily a convention as such) up North.

Any thoughts?

(I think that's the most sensible, calm, well-thought out response
that I've read in this particular item yet.)

I like that idea. Who wants to be in charge?
