Inadequate to the purpose for Grex. We're not talking about M-Net.

True. And I have kept my mouth shut for a while now. First off, Jamie is
a friend of mine - but even I take him with a grain of salt. Yes, he's
pompous and at times, obnoxious. But I think you are overlooking the good
things he could bring to the table. I thought he had some great ideas - I
would love if I could pay one fee and be a member of both grex and m-net.
They are such wildly diverse systems - just as your board would be diverse
if you actually looked at Jamie as a serious contender. It's not all bad,
people.

Laugh all you want - you are just as much of an ass here as you are on m-net.

I think the main difference between grex and m-net is that on the latter
everyone seems to be calling everyone else an ass. Can they all be right?

I *was* giving him the benefit of the doubt initially. I did not lie
about that.

He came under immediate strong criticism. Rather than simply
explaining his point of view, he lashed out. He's made several
negative comments about Grexers... the same folks he claims to want to
serve.

The things he brings up *are* worthy of consideration. But they can
happen without him. I want to know that the right people are handling
the issues we are concerned about.

His approach is piss-poor and has been from the beginning. I don't
want to be attacked if he is in a position of power and I question his
viewpoint.

I think he's intelligent but tact does matter. As someone who may be
serving *my* needs, his attitude towards me indeed matters. The fact
that he does not think so shows him to be short-sighted, focused only
on his personal goals regardless of who he offends. This is not
appropriate in a customer service environment. The fact that he can
only spout that I don't know politics when I call him on this point
only proves that he is selfish and will not concede a valid point. He
will need to be able to compromise when he is faced with reasonable
opposition.

I do not believe that Jamie seriously expects to win any grex elections, and
I think he is just talking about it as a joke. To win, he would have had to
convince a lot of his friends to become grex members, which would probably
require that he get more people to pay for grex memberships than the total
who have paid for m-net memberships.

Add me to the list of people who don't think conference calling would be a
good way to conduct meetings. In my professional life we do conference calls,
but we also sometimes conclude that a ftf meeting is needed.

re 186: We're talking about such small sums of money here that any kind
of joint membership program is not going to be worth the hassle of
administering it. I certainly don't think it will bring in more than a
couple of new memberships. Aside from a few fanatics, most users don't
have the time--even if they had the inclination--to keep up with
discussions on both systems. Those that are really hot to be voting
members of both MNet and Grex probably already belong to both groups
already.

As for joint publicity, that's a fine idea. There's nothing to stop us
from doing that now, aside from the lack of volunteers to actually do
the work.

OK...

here's a lesson for you...

CONCEDED... HE DID NOT SAY "KNOWS". You said I had no experience. I
think this clearly implied that you were wishing to point out a lack of
knowledge in order to discredit me.

There was no lie.

I did not quote you. Beyond semantics, I still feel what I said was
accurate.

Re #184: Well, mnet once tried a nude fundraiser. I'm not sure how
successful it was. ;>

Re #202: One business I interned at practically ran on speakerphone
conference calls, sometimes as many as four per day. People quickly
learned to detest them. It's impossible to have a multi-person
discussion that way without everyone taking turns, round-robin style,
because as soon as anyone starts talking the speaker mutes and they
can't hear what anyone on the other end is saying. (i.e., it's half
duplex.) This makes meetings last about four times as long as they
would otherwise.

Conference calls with speakerphones should be considered a last resort.

I could see an arrangement where members of one system would get to be
non-voting members of the other for free. So M-Net members could have
outbound net access from Grex. If you wanted to vote on both systems,
you'd have to be a member on both systems. I'm not sure I'm in favor
of the idea, but it'd be worth discussing.

I found a quote from Jamie in resp:178 which I think demonstrates
why he's completely unsuitable for election to the Grex board:

"* Feelings be damned. This is business, not pleasure."

Someone who has more time than I have might try to explain to Jamie why
this is *such* a wrong attitude for a volunteer organization.

Unfortunately I think the attitude Jamie expresses carries a lot of
weight on M-net. It's reached the point where I start to cringe
whenever the terms "business" or "professional" start being thrown
around on M-net. I think that attitude also explains why M-net has
a volunteer shortage, and why so many former prominent M-netters
have ended up primarily as Grexers over the last ten years.

It's an attitude that Grex cannot afford, because Grex recognizes
that its volunteers are its most important resource.
