And the vote program is now up and running for the board election.
Telnet and dialup users: Type "vote" at a Unix shell prompt, or
"!vote" at almost any other prompt, to enter the voting booth.
Once there, you can see the candidate list, read their statements,
and vote if you wish.

You can do all of the above on the web as well, by visiting
http://cyberspace.org/cgi-bin/pw/voting-booth .

You can modify your vote as many times as you wish.

The polls close on December 15, at midnight.

I recognize that this item is not the best place to make this particular
suggestion, but I believe it would be useful to set up an alias in Picospan
that would call up the vote program. Requiring an exclamation point
to preceed the command in Picospan seems unnecessary.

Re #181: I disabled the program for a few minutes to correct a
mistake on the ballot. It's back in business now.

Re #182: I agree, it'd be nice. I guess 'i' would be the person
to address the request to.

Also re #181: You don't have to vote again unless you want to
change your previous vote. I emailed everybody who'd voted so
far (7 people) about the mistake (Joe Gelinas was accidentally
left off the ballot), so you should've received that mail.

I just voted. It appears that there are more excellent candidates running
than there are slots available on the board. Thanks to all who ran.

hey just though of something...what happens if there is a tie in
the voting? say, since four new new board members are being elected
and there is a two or three way tie for fourth place? is there
a runoff election or would the current board vote for the final board
member among those tied?

I guess if there was a tie, the policy could be to then count the non member
votes and see if that breaks the tie?

The bylaws don't specify how to resolve ties. If it comes up,
I'd think the board - as the elected representatives of the
members - would be the appropriate body to decide how to
resolve it. There'd be time to do that, since the current
board remains in office for 16 days after the end of the
election. There'd even be time for discussion in Coop
beforehand.

The election is over. I'm going to hold off reporting the results
until I receive confirmation from the treasurer that the voter list
is accurate.

Here are the election results. Out of 93 eligible voting members,
45 cast a ballot. The totals:

        mdw 30
        mary 30
        other 28
        flem 24
        bhelliom 24
        kaplan 21
        gelinas 15
        jp2 2

Since there are four open slots, mdw, mary, and other are elected to
to 2-year terms. There is a tie for 4th place, between flem and
bhelliom.

There's never been a tie in Grex board elections, but there was
one instance of a "failed" election, when the voter turnout didn't
meet the quota prescribed in the bylaws. (The bylaws were
subsequently amended to eliminate quotas.) The existing board met
and scheduled a new election. So in this case, I'd suggest that the
current board follow precedent and decide how to resolve the tie.

In the meantime, congratulations to the three definite winners.

(The unofficial non-member tally: mary 42, mdw 28, bhelliom 27,
kaplan 25, jp2 18, other 16, flem 16, gelinas 8.)

starting as soon as possible.

Hmm. I guess this means I need to update my resumé again...

Mary, welcome aboard. I look eagerly forward to serving with you.

I propose that a runoff election be held to determine which of either
flem or bhelliom will fill the final board slot, beginning as soon as a
qurorum of the existing board make it known in this item that they
support that as the way to resolve the tie.

If the board decides on a runoff, I'll be happy to administer it.
Just tell me when to start it and how many days it should run.
