(if it might take more than next Monday to find out about the donated space,
I suggest some contact with the other landlord to let him know you're
interested, and begin to work out the details. You could still drag it out
over a week or so while you continue to persue the donated space. The
commercial landlord needs an 'offer' from grex on an amount for rent so he
can discuss that with his partner. When we viewed the site, we talked about
a couple of different scenarios for that.)

Re the space on Pauline, I called, but it's taken already. *sigh* I'll
continue to keep my eyes and ears open.

I believe the appeals hearing with the Building Board is scheduled
for July 16. There seem to be some promising offers of at least
temporary space for Grex. Would anybody care to enter a more
detailed summary of the move status at this point (omitting details
that should be kept in confidence at this stage, of course)?

One should use caution in accepting aid from Wavy-Davy Cahill. As a
lawyer he seems to get his innocent clients thrown in prison (e.g.
Baker) and as a supporter of a point of view or candidate his
advocacy seems to ensure defeat (a la Harkin).

David was the only attorney working the Baker case when Baker was picked
up and arraigned by the feds. I believe Brian is referring to the fact
that Jake was not accompanied by counsel when he was arraigned or when his
bail was set.
Doug Mullkoff did an excellent job, getting the charges against Jake
resolved in Jake's favor. He is in no way responsible for the fact that
Jake was incarcerated -- he wasn't on the case at that time. He is a fine
criminal defense attorney, providing quality work.

Re 180-184: A reminder please: This is *not* the M-Net Policy Conference.
Please keep random mud-slinging on issues irrelevant to Grex under control.
Move status:
We have located one very nice commercial location that would suit is very
well, but is a bit more expensive than we would like. We could likely
afford it though. If we move there, we will need to build some walls.
Volunteer carpenters and electricians (especially licensed electricians)
would be very much appreciated.
We are pursuing a possible space that would be free (we'd only pay
electricity). This is at a very early stage, but it's a good place and
obviously tempting.
There have been a number of proposals to co-locate with some company that
already has a high-speed internet connection and might let us hook up to
them. These deals seem to be hard to put together, but it would give us
a better and more reliable internet connection (no modems), so there are
clear advantages to such an arrangement. We are concerned about losing
some independence if we tie ourselves too closely to another organization.
Most organizations are worried about giving our staff 24 hour access to
their spaces, and about us eating all their bandwidth. There is one
promising deal of this form still being talked about.
There are all sorts of other less well-developed lines being followed. We
could still use more options though.
In the event that we have to move out of the Dungeon before we have another
place ready, there are plans to set-up Grex at a temporary location. It
look right now as if there will be no problem keeping Grex (pretty much)
continuously on the internet even from a temporary location (that only
requires one phone line). However it is less obvious that we will be able
to maintain local dial-in access if this happens. Maybe. Maybe not.
At least some staff members feel very strongly about maintaining continuous
dial-in service, and are ready to go to extraordinary lenths to ensure that
it happens.
We hope, however, that we can have a new location ready before we have to
vacate the dungeon. If that can be accomplished, down time should be very
brief.
Moving will be (by Grex standards) rather expensive, and there is a chance
that we will end up in a more expensive place. There is *no* danger of
Grex disappearing instead of moving (as some rumors say). But the move
will leave our cash reserve significantly depleated. We had anticipated
that we might eventually have to move, and had been trying to maintain a
cushion for that, but we hadn't expected it so soon and income hasn't been
great lately. Proceeds from the auction (which is still in progress --
"join auction") will help, but expect Grex to be begging for money a bit
more fervantly for a while.
I think that's pretty much it. Sorry for being vague on a lot of this. A
lot is negotiation in progress, and I have no idea how many details are
OK to publicize.

Actually, you can use normal folks to do the wiring (get "wiring
simplified", a fantastic lil reference - and alwyas up to code if new)
And, then just ask an electrician to check the end result and check it
off - AAMOF, I'd leave the breaker-box to the pro, simply because
220-plus is a bit "hairy" ;-)

Nice summary, Jan. The special board meeting has now happened.
We had a great turnout (16), and we discussed some additional sites and some
more information about some of them. I have already typed in the mintues of
the board meeting, and will post them in a new item. Please read them over
there, because I do not plan on reposting the same informnation here (though
others are welcome to do so).
We can identify some (but not all ) of these sites that are beiong considered.
(1) American Red Cross of Washtenaw County (donated space)
(2) Commercial Building on West Huron Street ($60)
(3) Commercial Building on Plymouth Road (rent to be negotiated)
(4) Colocation with an ISP, still being negotiated. May not work out.

Numbers (1) and (2) on the list are new discoveries, more or less. It looks
like we now have at least one viable alternative that is *cheaper* than our
current space.

I used to work across the street and about a block West of the Huron St.
location, so I used to walk past there rather late at night fairly frequently.
It seemed safe.
